USA Junior Men Take Eighth At FINA Junior World Championships

SIBENIK, Croatia, August 31. THE USA Men's Junior National Team closed out play at the FINA Men's Junior World Championships with an 11-3 loss to Australia. With the loss the squad takes eighth place at the championships ending with a record of 3-4.

Team USA got off to a strong start in this contest as Forrest Watkins (SoCal) scored the first goal of the match less than a minute in to take a 1-0 lead. That was short-lived however as Australia came back with two straight goals to lead 2-1 going to the second. In the second period the Aussies ran off three straight goals to take a 5-1 lead before Josh Samuels (SoCal) stopped the run with a tally for the United States. Australia added one more tally and held a 6-2 led at halftime.

In the early third quarter the United States got their deficit in half when Nick Hoversten (Lamorinda) found the net for a 6-3 game with 5:07 left in the period. Australia would score about a minute later to go up 7-3 and that would be the score as played moved on to the fourth. The final quarter was all for Australia as they kept the USA off the scoreboard while adding on four more scores to take an insurmountable 11-3 lead and would go on to win by that same margin.

Jon Sibley (Lamorinda) and Andrew Lighterink (San Diego Shores) split time in goal posting five saves. Team USA went just 2/10 on man advantages while Australia was 2/5. Neither team attempted a penalty shot. To recap the USA men opened the tourney with a victory over Spain 7-6 on August 22, lost to Serbia 8-6 on August 23, defeated South Africa 18-6 on August 24, trumped Brazil 8-1 on August 27, lost to Croatia 11-6 on August 28, were edged by Italy 9-8 on August 29, and concluded earlier today with the loss to Australia.
