USA Swimming Junior Nationals: Tie, Close Calls Center Stage

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, August 12. THE third evening of the USA Swimming Junior Nationals featured a tie and several other exciting finishes.

Fort Lauderdale's Lauren Driscoll easily claimed the women's 400 free title in 4:10.37. The swim crushed her preliminary meet record of 4:12.55. Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton, fresh off the a taxing FINA World Championships, wound up second in 4:13.58 as she just held off Terrapins' Chelsea Chenault and AGUA's Sara Giberson. In an exciting finish, Chenault and Giberson tied for third behind Sutton with matching 4:13.68s.

New South's Brett Boston won a close contest in the men's 400 free with a 3:56.03. Dallas Mustang Caleb Veazey snared second in 3:56.20 with New Trier's Samuel Metz placing third in 3:56.93. Notably, Connor Signorin won the B final with a 3:56.60. Jason Taylor's meet record of 3:55.19 from last year is one of the few meet records to hold up this week.

North Baltimore's Felicia Lee used a strong backhalf to win the women's 100 fly in 58.69. Turning second with a 27.89 at the 50, she came home in 30.80 to break her preliminary meet record of 59.22. North Coast's Kendyl Stewart snared second in 59.51 after turning first at 27.83. Spartaquatics' Haley Lips also cleared 1:00 with a third-place 59.83.

Duneland's Kyle Whitaker and Tualatin Hills' Neil O'Halloran produced an exciting finish in the men's 100 fly with a dead heat at 53.31. South West's Jack Lennertz snagged third in 53.44. Munster's Kevin Behrens took fourth in 53.58. All four cleared the meet record of 53.61 set by Eagle's Giles Smith during prelims. Smith took sixth in 53.88.

SwimMAC-Carolina's John Stilley, Kip Darmody, Thomas Santoli and Payne Montgomery claimed the meet record in the men's 800 free relay with a 7:32.14. The performance beat the 7:36.67 set in 2007.
