YMCA Long Course Championships: Marietta’s Tim Phillips Shines With YMCA Record Double

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, July 29. MARIETTA's Tim Phillips was the star of the show this evening at the YMCA Long Course Championships held in College Park, Md. He finished a difficult double with wins in the men's 100 fly and 200 free, with both eclipsing YMCA records.

Phillips set the meet record in the men's 100 fly with a 52.88. That performance crushed the 54.28 he set during prelims, which in turn cleared the 55.43 set by Pat Reams in 2005. Matthew Salig of Upper Main Line took second in 56.08 with W. North Carolina's Nathan Hart placing third in 56.35.

Phillips returned in the men's 200 free for a YMCA record double with a winning 1:50.75. That swim shattered the 1:52.25 set by Bobby Savulich in 2004. Upper Main Line's Salig placed second in 1:55.14, while Rappahannock's Josh Friedel finished third in 1:55.41.

South Family's Ty Perkins topped the men's 800 free in 8:25.05. That swim beat the YMCA record of 8:25.64 set by Chris Schenck in 2004. North Shore's Tim Bouvier finished second in 8:34.87, while Phoenixville's Parker Baisden touched third in 8:35.06.

Wilton's K.C. Moss, 14, eclipsed the YMCA record twice in the women's 200 breast. First, she clocked a 2:31.62 in prelims to break the 2:34.61 set by Jessica Botzum in 2004. She then won the event in 2:30.74 at night. Upper Main Line's Emily Schon placed second in 2:37.48, while W. North Carolina's Emily Marett touched third in 2:38.51.

Middle Tyger's Haley Lips, 15, won the women's 100 fly in 1:00.63. W. North Carolina's Victoria Oslund finished second in 1:02.47 with Andover's Rachel Moore, 15, taking third in 1:02.88.

Red Bank's Harrison Cefalo captured the men's 200 breast in 2:23.41. W. North Carolina's Bill Young, 15, placed second in 2:25.68, while Sunbury's Zach Stephens took third in 2:26.03.

Wilton's Shelby Fortin claimed the women's 200 free in 2:04.61, while Countryside's Breann McDowell (2:06.47) and Gr. Flint's Anna Wujciak, 14, (2:06.64) completed the top three.

Middle Tyger's Addie Carne, Lips, Sara Beth Drake and Laura Simon set the women's 400 free relay YMCA record with a 3:55.40. The time clipped the 3:55.59 set by West Shore YMCA last year. Upper Main Line's Thomas Mershon, Salig, Andrew Seiler and Reed followed with a YMCA record in the men's 400 free relay in 3:31.18. They beat the 3:33.66 set by Middle Tyger also last year.
