USA Swimming Sectionals, Clovis: Close Finishes Center Stage

CLOVIS, California, July 25. THE fourth evening of long course meter action at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Clovis, Calif., featured several close contests.

Santa Clara's Courtney Monsees dropped the hammer to win the women's 200 IM in 2:17.03. She touched at the 150-meter mark at nearly the same time as La Mirada's Kirstie Chen, but scorched the final 50 in 30.69 for the win. Chen claimed second in 2:17.73, while Monrovia's Angela Haven finished third in 2:18.40. Terrapins' Sean Mahoney dominated the men's 200 IM with a 2:01.98. Lakeridge's Michael Weiss touched second in 2:04.29, while Swim Pasadena's Christopher Quemena placed third in 2:04.96.

Palo Alto Stanford's Maddy Schaefer topped the women's 50 free in 25.70. Monsees finished second in 26.62 with Sierra Marlins' Alexandra Whitford completing the top three in 26.63. Clovis' Josh Daniels touched out teammate Jeff Daniels, 22.82 to 22.90, in the men's 50 free. Swim Torrance's Vladimir Morozov placed third in 23.00.

Terrapins' Chelsea Chenault, 14, won the women's 400 free in 4:12.53. Palo Alto Stanford's Jasmine Tosky took second in 4:13.87, while La Mirada's Samantha Shellem wound up third in 4:14.21. Santa Clara's Ryan Hinshaw touched out Class' Chase Bloch, 3:58.65 to 3:58.88, in the men's 400 free. Boulder City's Johnathan Mendoza finished third in 4:00.40.
