USA Swimming Sectionals, Knoxville: ACC Teams Dominate First Night

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, July 16. WHILE the event might have taken place in the backyard of the Southeastern Conference at the University of Tennessee, swimmers from the Atlantic Coast Conference dominated the podium during the first night of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Knoxville.

North Carolina's Katura Harvey cruised in the women's 800 free with a triumphant time of 8:45.40. Duke's Dania Marinshaw placed second with a time of 8:56.45, while Georgia Coastal's Nicole Menzel completed the top three in 8:56.62. In the men's distance event, Pilot's John Gaylor won in front of a home crowd with an 8:20.53 in the 800 free. Baylor's Nathan Vredeveld touched second in 8:25.03, while North Carolina's Jesse Mendes claimed third in 8:33.22.

North Carolina's Marie Pesacreta beat teammate Layne Brodie, 2:19.92 to 2:21.64, for the women's 200 IM title. Lakeside's Meredith King wound up third in 2:21.68. Andy Brake captured the men's 200 IM crown with a 2:06.53 while swimming unattached. Tennessee's Anders Storvik finished second in 2:06.91 with Istvan Bathazi taking third in 2:08.25, also unattached.

Wildcat's Jenna Newsome snared the women's 50 free victory in 26.34. Madison's Jenny von Jouanne took second in 26.43 with North Carolina's Megan Steeves placing third in 26.45. Tennessee's Mason Norman topped the men's 50 free in 23.28. Virginia's Peter Geissinger (23.56) and Tennessee's Storvik (23.71) rounded out the top three.

Wildcat's Kelsey Floyd earned victory in the close contest in the women's 200 fly with a 2:16.15. Virginia's Joanna Thomas touched a close second in 2:16.68. Lakeside's Lean Reinhardt wound up third in 2:17.66. Virginia's Dan McMahon won the men's 200 fly in 2:01.45. Cardinal's Riley Martin (2:02.75) and North Carolina's Jason McLaughlin (2:03.53) finished second and third.
