Canada World Championships Trials: Victoria Poon, Brent Hayden, Matt Hawes Set National Records

MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada, July 11. THREE more events featured Canadian records during the fourth day of competition at the Canadian World Championships Trials.

Victoria Poon took down the women's 50 free Canadian record twice throughout the day. First, she hit the wall in 25.12 during prelims to best her 25.35 set in June this year. She then raced to a 25.06 in finals for the win, and the record. Amanda Reason placed second in 25.69, while Emily Wong took third in 25.71.

Brent Hayden also cleared his Canadian record twice in the men's 50 free. First, he touched in 22.01 during prelims to drop the 22.19 he set in 2006. He then won the finale with a 21.94. Joel Greenshields captured second in 22.70, while Jeffrey Sudbury earned third in 22.71.

Matt Hawes collected the third Canadian record of the day with a 1:57.34 in the men's 200 back. That effort erased the 1:58.50 set by Keith Beavers at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Charles Francis took second in 1:59.67 with Nicholas Sinclair placing third in 2:03.23.

Julia Wilkinson snatched the women's 200 IM title with a time of 2:13.20, while Erica Morningstar finished second in 2:13.76. Stephanie Horner completed the top three in 2:14.72. Jordan Hartney followed in the men's 200 IM with a 2:02.14, while Bogdan Knezevic (2:02.88) and Andrew Ford (2:02.93) rounded out the podium.

Barbara Jardin led a trio of 2:12s with a 2:12.02 for the women's 200 back victory. Lauren Lavigna (2:12.38) and Gabrielle Soucisse (2:12.60) wound up second and third.

Savannah King snared the women's 800 free crown in 8:37.09, while Lindsay Seemann finished second in 8:38.99. Susana Escobar clinched third in 8:48.27. Ryan Cochrane clocked a 15:03.41 to win the men's 1500 free. Kier Maitland (15:15.84) and Michael Zoldos (15:21.04) placed second and third.
