European Junior Championships: European Junior Record Book Torched; Few National Records Fall as Well

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, July 10. THE junior level swimmers are getting it done at the European Junior Championships as more than a handful of European Junior records fell tonight. A few national records tumbled as well.

In preliminary swimming in the men's 50 breast, Andrea Toniato of Italy set the Euro Junior record with a 27.81. Alexander Triznov of Russia, however, turned in a 27.34 in finals for the win to not only grab the Euro Junior standard but also the Russian mark. Roman Sloudnov held the previous record with a 27.60 set in 2001. Toniato finished second in 28.03 with Czech's Petr Bartunek winding up third in 28.30.

Meanwhile, Poland's Radoslaw Kawecki turned in a Euro Junior record time of 1:56.97 in the men's 200 back semis. The swim also broke his Polish record of 1:58.74 set in May 2009.

Also in semis, Italy's Silvia Di Pietro punched the wall in 59.22 for the Euro Junior mark in the women's 100 fly.

Poland's Marcin Cieslak clocked a 1:56.13 in the men's 200 fly for the win, and the Euro Junior standard. Israel's Nimrod Hayet (1:57.97) and Hungary's Zsombor Szana (1:58.76) finished second and third.

Daniil Izotov of Russia raced to a 48.48 in the men's 100 free for the Euro Junior record, and the meet title. Italy's Francesco Donin (48.80) and Luca Leonardi (48.83) completed the podium.

Ukraine's Mariya Tereschenko captured the women's 50 back Euro Junior mark with a 29.06. Teammate Daryna Zevina took second in 29.17 with Poland's Klaudia Nazieblo placing third in 29.34.

In other finals action, Italy's Ilaria Scarcella touched out Spain's Marina Garcia Urzainqui, 2:25.02 to 2:25.05, for the women's 200 breast title. Russia's Olga Detenyuk placed third in 2:26.76.

Luxembourg's Raphael Stacchiotti claimed the men's 200 IM in 2:02.56, while Hungary's Dominik Kozma (2:04.05) and Germany's Morten Ahme (2:04.29) placed second and third.

Ireland's Grainne Murphy captured the women's 800 free in 8:36.63. Slovenia's Tjasa Oder touched second in 8:38.26 with Spain's Claudia Dasca Romeu rounding out the top three in 8:40.02.
