Montenegro Tops Team USA Men’s Water Polo, 10-6, In Semifinals Of FINA World League Super Final

PODGORICA, Montenegro, June 21. THE USA Men's National Team fell to Montenegro 10-6 in the semi-final of the FINA World League Super Final. The squad will now play for the Bronze Medal tomorrow at 9:30am Pacific Time. The game will be streamed live on universalsports.com and will be followed by the Gold Medal contest at 11:00am Pacific Time.

In this contest Montenegro, playing in front of a raucous home crowd, got started early with a 3-0 lead after the first. In the second period the United States got on the board with a pair of goals, but that was matched by two Montenegro goals and the lead remained three at 5-2 at the half.

The third quarter saw another goal from Team USA but that was countered by three goals from Montenegro and they built an 8-3 advantage going to the fourth. In the fourth the United States hoped to rally posting three goals but it would not be enough as Montenegro added two more scores to come away the winners at 10-6.

Tony Azevedo led the scoring for the United States with two goals. He was joined by a goal each from Jeff Powers, Tim Hutten, Peter Varellas, and Jesse Smith. Merrill Moses went the whole way in net for Team USA stopping 7 shots. The US went 2/8 in player advantages and converted both of their penalty shot attempts.

"It's the type of game we need to learn to win. Montenegro is definitely a better team and we have alot of work to do," said USA Head Coach Terry Schroeder.
