TYR Swim Meet of Champions: Olympians Shine During Second Evening

MISSION VIEJO, California, June 19. THE second night of long course meter swimming at the TYR Swim Meet of Champions spotlighted a stocked field of Olympians.

California Aquatics put together a 1-2 finish in the women's 100 free to start the evening. Madison Kennedy snatched the title in 56.15 over teammate Dana Vollmer, who finished second in 57.04. Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton, a distance specialist, demonstrated some speed with a third-place 57.33. (Watch video highlights below.)

In a heavyweight battle between a pair of American Olympic sprinters in the men's 100 free, California's Nathan Adrian surfaced victorious against Rose Bowl's Jason Lezak, 48.92 to 49.07. Adrian's teammate Dominik Meichtry grabbed third in 49.83.

Trojan's Katinka Hosszu raced to a win in the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:10.14. Canada's MacKenzie Downing placed second behind Hosszu with a 2:11.17. Noelle Tarazona completed the top three in 2:13.19. The Fish's Michael Flach cruised in the men's 200 fly for a win in 2:04.68. New Zealand's Steven Kent placed second in 2:05.23 nearly a second behind, while Mission Viejo's Deni Cullom grabbed third in 2:07.25.

Trojan's Dina Hegazy dominated the women's 200 back with a top time of 2:14.28. North Coast's Anna Pold earned second in 2:16.16, while Aquazots' Melanie Klaren placed third in 2:19.41. Cal's David Russell cleared 2:00 for the win in the men's 200 back with a 1:59.40. Novaquatics' Derya Buyukuncu snatched second in 2:01.58, while Korea's Kim Jihyun rounded out the podium in 2:04.84.

Sutton returned to capture her second freestyle victory in as many days. After topping the women's 800 free last night, Sutton rolled through the women's 400 free with a winning time of 4:08.94. The Fish's Kate Ziegler, still on the comeback trail, took second-place honors with a time of 4:12.84. Trojan's Whitney Sprague picked up third in 4:17.45.

New Zealand's Andy McMillan followed in the men's 400 free with a triumphant 3:58.27. Compatriot Kane Radford, who is representing Mission Viejo, took second in 4:00.91. Cullom placed third in 4:00.96.

In relay action, West Coast's Cynthia Fascella, Shelby Webber, Kelsey Cummings and Cindy Tran won the women's 400 free relay in 3:55.68 keyed by Tran's anchor leg of 57.92. New Zealand's McMillan, Adam McDonald, John Gatfield and Steven Kent pocketed the men's 400 free relay in 3:28.66.
