South Africa Water Polo to Take Up the Challenge Against World’s Best at the FINA World League in Montenegro

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, June 14. SOUTH African national men's team water polo coach Vladimir Trninic views his team's participation in the FINA World League showdown in Podgorica, Montenegro, as a test of character and skill.

SA has been drawn in Pool B along with Australia, Croatia and the hosts, Montenegro, and could well face either the USA (the Olympic silver medallists) or Italy in the second round.

"We managed to score record-breaking results during the African qualifying leg of the World League held in Morocco last month, but this week's matches will be extremely tough and good experience for our players ahead of the FINA World Championships to be held in Rome, Italy next month," said Trninic.

"Even with Hungary (the Olympic champions) not participating in the tournament due to their own preparation plan for the FINA World Championships, Montenegro, Croatia and Serbia will be there, who along with Hungary are the top four men's water polo teams in the world."

"The SA team of players includes 4 new caps in point players in Andrew Ridley, Gavin Kyte, Chris Brown and Jason Kyte and it's a great opportunity for these players to experience the highest level of water polo around," added Trninic.

SA will open their Group B campaign against the hosts Montenegro on Tuesday, June 16, before facing Australia (Wednesday, June 17) and Croatia (June 18).

SA men's water polo squad: Richard Downes (KZN), Pierre le Roux (CGA), Jean le Roux (CGA), Etienne le Roux (CGA), Dwayne Flatscher (CGA), Andrew Ridley (WPA), Jan-Marc de Carvalho (CGA), Gavin Kyte (CGA), Chris Brown (WPA), Jason Kyte (CGA), Rick Diesel (CGA), Adam Kajee (WPA), William Naidoo (WPA), Nardus Badenhorst CGA).

Coach: Vladimir Trninic
