Southwest Classic Invitational: Australia Completes Strong Meet

TUCSON, Arizona, June 7. THE Australian contingent dispatched to Tucson this weekend completed a strong performance with several more gold medals at the Southwest Classic Invitational.

After a yesterday when Australia dominated the top of the podium, Lara Jackson returned fire for Ford Aquatics with a 25.97 to win the women's 50 free. Meagen Nay, who had six golds heading into the day, took second in 26.07. Leone Vorster of Ford placed third in 26.70.

Australia's Leisel Jones raced to victory in the women's 100 breast with a time of 1:06.67. Teammates Sarah Katsoulis (1:08.32) and Samantha Marshall (1:08.72) finished second and third.

The Whitneys duked it out in the women's 100 fly with Myers winning in 1:01.15 and Lopus placing second in 1:01.52. Australia's Zoe Johnson finished third in 1:01.59.

Stephanie Rice cruised in the women's 400 IM with a victorious time of 4:42.88. Ford's Jenny Forster touched second in 4:51.50, while Alyssa Anderson took third in 4:52.61.

Australia's Nay, Jones, Rice and Belinda Parslow won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:06.55 to give Nay her seventh gold of the meet.

Matt Grevers held off Ford Aquatic teammate Simon Burnett, 22.73 to 22.89, in the men's 50 free. Australia's Lloyd Townsing placed third in 23.09.

Brenton Rickard raced to victory in the men's 100 breast with a 1:01.33. Ford's Marcus Titus finished second in 1:03.71 with Australia's Jeremy Myers taking third in 1:03.96. Notably, Jeff Commings, 35, came within a second of the FINA Masters world record in the 35-39 division with a sixth-place 1:05.70. Nick Gillingham holds the record with a 1:04.73 from 2004.

Ford's Albert Subirats eased through the men's 100 fly with a winning time of 52.81. Teammate Masayuki Kishida finished second in 54.21, while Stefan Hirniak took third in 54.92.

Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes won the men's 400 IM in 4:23.57, while Ford's Jack Brown touched second in 4:26.68. Australia's Stephen Parkes wound up third in 4:29.33.

Australia's Ashley Delaney, Rickard, Kenrick Monk and Nicholas Ffrost won the men's 400 medley relay in 3:39.45.
