Italian Long Course Nationals: Ilaria Scarcella Claims Another Italian Record

PESCARA, Italy, May 30. ILARIA Scarcella concluded a lights out week of swimming with another Italian record at the Italian Long Course Nationals held in Pescara.

This time, Scarcella clocked a 2:23.63 in the women's 200 breast. That performance blasted the record of 2:26.90 set by Ombretta Plos in March. The readout also put Scarcella within striking distance of the European standard time of 2:22.46 held by Austria's Mirna Jukic. Chiara Boggiatto (2:26.45) and Pamela Gabrieli (2:26.53) finished second and third under the previous record, while Plos took fourth in 2:27.46.

Silvia Di Pietro captured the women's 100 fly title in 58.66, while Ilaria Bianchi took second in 58.80 and Caterina Giacchetti finished third in 59.31. Marco Belotti then touched out Mattia Nalesso, 23.86 to 23.87, in the men's 50 fly. Matteo Salomoni placed third in 24.10.

Samuel Pizzetti nearly cleared 15:00 in the men's 1500 free, but settled for a 15:00.96 for the win. Federico Colbertaldo, the Italian record holder with a 14:50.59 from June 2008, took second in 15:13.20. Riccardo De Lucia finished third in 15:18.28.

Valentina Lucconi raced to victory in the women's 200 back with a 2:13.32. Federica Sorriso touched second in 2:13.95 with Elisa Pasini placing third in 2:16.15. Alessio Boggiatto took home the men's 200 IM crown in 1:59.91, while Damiano Lestingi took second in 2:00.10. Massi Rosolino wound up third in 2:00.49.

In a close finish, Flavia Zoccari touched out Alice Carpanese, 1:59.28 to 1:59.31, in the women's 200 free. Renata Fabiola Spagnolo did not finish too much farther behind with a third-place 1:59.73.

Christian Galenda concluded the meet with a 48.93 to win the men's 100 free. Francesco Donin finished just behind in 48.99 for second, while Alessandro Calvi completed the podium in 49.24.
