CIF San Diego Section High School Swimming and Diving Championships

SAN DIEGO, California, May 29. THIS past weekend, the California Interscholastic Federation San Diego Section Division I and II Swimming Championships took place at Rancho Bernardo High School. State titles were won by Cathedral Catholic (Division II Girls), La Jolla (Division II Boys), and Carlsbad (Division I Girls and Boys) high schools.

Team Scores
At the Division II meet, the Cathedral Catholic girls took first place with 204 points. Mt. Carmel finished second (172) and La Jolla placed third (163). On the boys' side, La Jolla compiled 200 points to win the state title, while Coronado and Saint Augustine went head-to-head for second place. Coronado came out on top with 171 points, followed closely by Saint Augustine (168).

Carlsbad won the Division I state title. The girls accumulated 218 points, while Rancho Bernardo took the runner-up spot (184) and Torrey Pines scored out Eastlake by merely one point (with 172 points) for a third-place finish. The Carlsbad boys scored 247 points followed by Poway (172) and Westview (158).

Division II Results
The Division II competition began at 9 a.m. and was off to a quick start.
Jenna Harris, Chelsea Weedman, Mia Marinos, and Kimberli Boone opened the meet with a Division II record in the 200 medley relay. The group clocked a time of 1:50.50, surpassing Mt. Carmel's 2006 record. Weedman also had individual wins in the 200 IM (2:02.51) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.23).

Junior Jessica Heim (Horizon) won the distance races with times of 1:47.94 (200 freestyle) and 4:52.17 (500 freestyle).

Mt. Carmel won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.42. Dana Jones, Nicole Bustamante, Taylor Bugg, and Dani Spence contributed to the win.

Nicole Parmenter (San Marcos) set section records in the 100 butterfly (55.21) and the 100 backstroke (54.55).

Haren Alanis (La Jolla), who won the 100 freestyle (51.91), teamed up with Samantha McLaughlin, Grace Benefield, and Allie Knight with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.73).

For the boys, Coronado's Andrew Ireland, Francisco Heredia, Rex Butler and Adam Ratcliffe won the 200 medley relay (1:38.56). Ireland also won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.92.

Butler had individual first-place finishes. In the 50 freestyle, he tied with Spencer Valentine's 2003 Division II record with a time of 21.14. He also set a Division II record in the 100 freestyle (46.26), surpassing sophomore Danny Ettelson's (Mt. Carmel) prelim time of 47.09. Ettelson placed fifth in finals with a time of 47.79.

Juniors Tyler Woods, Troy LeLoup, Miko Vespremi, and Hunter Gettlefinger (La Jolla) took first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.60).

Justin DiFederico (Christian) had individual wins in the 100 butterfly (50.17) and the 100 backstroke. He tied Cory Sinclair's section record in the 100 backstroke, set in 1993, with a time of 50.23.

Coronado closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. Ireland, Michael Aguilar, Tommy Schofer, and Butler clocked a time of 3:10.10.

Division I Results
Torrey Pines opened the meet with a section record in the 200 medley relay. Allison DeParalta, Jessica Schmitt, Allison Paris, and Kelsey Loy clocked a time of 1:46.72 for the win. Schmitt, a Swimming World five-star recruit who is headed to the University of Southern California in the fall, had individual wins in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. She bettered her own section record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.16, and was only .08 seconds off Staci Stitts 1998 section record in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.85).

Two-star recruit Jacquie Kimmel (Eastlake), who is headed to the University of Pacific (California) in the fall, set a section record in the prelims of the 50 freestyle (23.68). In the finals, however, Katie Tomkinson (Carlsbad) touched out Kimmel by only 3-hundredths of a second (23.73). In addition to her win in the 50 freestyle, Tomkinson surpassed Valerie Tukey's Division I record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.83.

Freshman Kendyl Stewart (La Costa Canyon) set a section record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.44. The previous record, set in 2007, was held by Bianca Casciari. In the 100 backstroke, Stewart surpassed the Division I record set by Kirsten Fontana in 2006 with a time of 55.37. She was only .25 seconds off the last year's section record set by Nicole Parmenter.

Eastlake's Andrea Voigt, Justine Maher, Taylor Stoddard, and Kimmel set section records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays with times of 1:36.77 and 3:29.65. The previous records were set by Torrey Pines in 2007.

In the boy's competition, three-star recruit Spencer DiDio (Carlsbad), who is headed to the University of Southern California in the fall, had individual wins in the 200 IM (1:50.39) and the 100 butterfly. In the 100 butterfly, he exceeded the section record set by William Mc in 2001 with a time of 48.92.

DiDio teamed up with Joe Stitts, Conor Cackovic, and Collin Smith in the 200 medley relay. The group set a section record with a time of 1:33.94. Stitts had individual wins in the 50 (21.00) and 100 (45.98) freestyles as well.

Fallbrook's Geoffrey Jameson, Kevin Reichel, Kai Bowman, and Jacob Pril won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.82.

Stitts, Cackovic, Lewis Anderson, and DiDio closed the meet with a section record in the 400 freestyle relay (3:05.77). The previous record was set in 1993 by Mount Carmel.

Diving Results
The diving competition took place at Helix Charter High School last Friday at 2 p.m.

El Capitan's Sam Wilson won the Division II girls diving competition with a score of 216.75. Flora Wilds (Our Lady of Peace Academy) and Ashley Butler (Cathedral Catholic) placed second (184.95) and third (178.80) respectively.

Freshman Josh Sammons (Ramona) won the Division II boys diving completion with 207.10 points. Kirk Lee of La Jolla took the runner-up spot (188.50) and Robert Morris of Scripps Ranch placed third (184.45).

In the Division I girls diving competition, Haley Francois (Rancho Bernardo) won with a score of 228.00. Kiley Belcher (Mission Hills) and Nicholle Kohls (Fallbrook) followed with scores of 217.40 and 206.15 respectively.

Kevin Dressen (Granite Hills) set a section record with a score of 252.45 in the Division I boys diving competion. Cody Walwick (Westview) took second (230.55) and Josh Urnezis (Rancho Bernardo) finished third (227.15).
