Korea Earns 2015 World University Games Hosting Duties

GWANGJU, Korea, May 27. THE International University Sports Federation (FISU) recently named Gwangju, Korea as the hosts for the 2015 World University Games to be held in the summer.

The 28th edition of the Summer Universiade will travel back to Korea in 2015. After hosting the Winter Universiade in 1997 in the cities Chonju and Muju, the Koreans also staged a successful Summer edition of the Games in 2003 in the city of Daegu. The Koreans were very determined to get the Games, bidding also for 2013 when they lost to Kazan, Russia.

"Many civilians walked 2,015 steps every day in support for the bid while more than 150,000 citizens have volunteered to help promote the bid," Mayor Park Kwang-tae said. "Our citizens will be ecstatic. We will host the best Games in FISU history."

Gwangju beat out Edmonton, Canada and Taipei City, Chinese Taipei for the summer bid.

Additionally, Granada, Spain was named the host of the 2015 winter version of the Universiade.
