Mel Zajac Junior International: Second Night of Finals Complete

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada, May 23. THE second night of long course meter swimming came to a close at the Mel Zajac Junior International held in Vancouver.

Hanna Kubas began the night with a winning time of 28.89 in the women's 50 back. Margaret Hoelzer placed second in 29.29 with Katy Murdoch taking third in 29.47. Daniel Arnamnart took down the meet record in the men's 50 back with a 25.50. That swim cleared the previous record of 26.06 set by Adam Mania with a 26.06 from 2006. Kyle Owens finished second in 26.22, while Matt Hawes placed third in 26.36.

Bronte Barratt cruised in the women's 400 free with a top time of 4:09.66. Kevyn Peterson claimed second in 4:11.99 with Alex Komarnycky taking third in 4:12.67. Ryan Cochrane dominated the men's 400 free with a 3:50.47. Payne Montgomery finished a distant second in 3:58.16, while Andre Cosgarea took third in 3:59.06.

Haley Lips touched out Chantal Vanlandeghem, 1:00.53 to 1:00.72, in the women's 100 fly. Brenna Maclean completed the top three in 1:00.89 with MacKenzie Downing also clearing 1:01 with a fourth-place 1:00.94. Joe Bartoch followed with a meet-record time of 53.52 in the men's 100 fly. That swim beat the 53.56 set by Mike Mintenko back in 2000. Dakota Hodgson placed second in 54.71 with Andre Blyth touching third in 54.99.

Ariana Kukors raced to victory in the women's 200 IM with a 2:11.07. That performance crushed the meet record of 2:13.43 set by Erica Morningstar last year. Madeline Dirado placed second in 2:13.84, while Melanie Margalis took third with a 2:17.72. Brian Johns won the men's 200 IM in 2:02.09. Keith Beavers claimed second in 2:03.02, while Ben Hinshaw finished third in 2:04.61.

The sprint 50 frees followed with Emily Lloyd taking the women's title in 25.80. Lauren Perdue finished second in 25.96. Vanlandeghem claimed third in 26.15. Brent Hayden then claimed the meet record with a 22.50 in the men's race. The readout cleared the 22.53 set by Hayden in 2008. Matt Rose finished second in 22.78, while Richard Hortness took third in 23.22.

Annamay Pierse claimed the women's 200 breast in 2:25.65. That time beat the meet record of 2:29.42 set by Pierse last year. Pierse's UBC Dolphin teammates Martha McCabe (2:27.02) and Hanna Pierse (2:29.35) joined her under the record in second and third. Scott Dickens completed individual events for the night with a 2:14.81 in the men's 200 breast. Matthew Elliott finished second in 2:17.44 while Jason Block took third in 2:24.26.

The U.S. junior team of Rebecca Jones, Jasmine Tosky, Chelsea Chenault and Melanie Klaren won the women's 800 free relay in 8:11.45. That time beat the meet record of 8:12.82 set by Australia in 2008. The U.S. B team of Andrea Murez, Missy Franklin, Margalis and Perdue took second in 8:11.94. The men's foursome of Cochrane, Stefan Hirniak, Jeremy Bagshaw and Grayson Repp won their respective 800 free relay crown in 7:31.88.
