Three Aggies Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, May 22. THREE members of the Texas A&M women's swimming & diving team were voted onto the ESPN The Magazine Women's At-Large Academic All-District Team for District 6, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday afternoon.

Juniors Ella Doerge (Clive, Iowa), Emily Neal (Plano), and Sarah Woods (Birmingham, Ala.) all hold perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point averages in genetics, political science, and chemical engineering, respectively.

A&M was the only school to place more than one athlete on the all-district first team. The three Aggies made up 30 percent of the 10-woman District 6 at-large first team which was eligible to athletes from the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, swimming & diving, and water polo from all universities in District 6 (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas). Five of the 10 athletes named to the first team earned 4.0 grade-point averages. Doerge, Neal, and Woods were also the only juniors voted onto the 10-woman team (one sophomore, six seniors).

The all-district at-large team was voted upon by registered members of CoSIDA who reside in District 6. Each school was allowed to nominate a maximum of three athletes total among the list of sports mentioned above. Athletes were required to carry a 3.3 cumulative GPA, be at least a sophomore academically and completed at least one full year at their current school, be a starter or important reserve, have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions and be nominated by a dues-paying member of CoSIDA.

Each of the first team members, including Doerge, Neal and Woods, now advance onto the national ballot which will declare 12 Academic All-Americans from a field of 82 women. The ballot will be voted upon by the CoSIDA Board of Directors and members of the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee. The results of the balloting will be released on June 11.

The last A&M swimmer to be named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American First Team was Jennifer Guillory in 1996. Senior Julia Wilkinson (Stratford, Ont.) became the first A&M female swimmer to make the national ballot in 12 years last spring, eventually carrying home third team honors.
