Gold Medal for Canada in Women’s Relay, Canadian Record for Victoria Poon

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, May 16. Victoria Poon helped the Club de natation des Piscine du Parc Olympique de Montréal earns its second relay gold and also broke her Canadian record in the women's 50-metre freestyle on Saturday at the Charlotte UltraSwim swimming competition.

In the women's 4X100 medley relay, Stephanie Horner, Michelle Laprade, Poon and Geneviève Saumur combined forces for the victory in four minutes and 11.48 seconds. An American foursome was second in 4:12.68 and Team Ontario with Andrea Jurenovskis of Toronto, Amanda Reason of Windsor, Paige Schultz of Toronto and Hayley Nell of London was third in 4:12.84.

In the women's 50 freestyle, Amanda Weir of the U.S., was the winner in 25.32 followed by Poon who clocked 25.42 to eclipse her 25.47 national mark she swam last year at the Olympic trials. Julia Smit of the U.S., was third in 25.43.

Two Canadians were in the women's 200 breaststroke final with Hilary Bell of Toronto placing fourth and Julie Calvert of Oakville, Ont., fifth. Three Canadians reached the men's 200 breaststroke final with Warren Barnes of Pickering, Ont., fifth, Marco Monaco of Toronto sixth and Simon Dupuis of Brossard, Que., seventh.

Curtis Samuel of Oakville, Ont., was sixth in the 200 butterfly.

Team Ontario teams placed fifth and sixth in the men`s 4X100 medley relay. The fifth place foursome was comprised of Matthew Swanston of Newmarket, Ont., Bryn Jones and Joe Bartoch of London and Brandon Kingston of Newmarket. The sixth place squad members were Andrew Ford of Guelph, Monaco, Zack Chetrat of Oakville and Samuel.
