Alabama Swimmer Kevin Greer Earns NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama, May 4. SENIOR Kevin Greer became the fourth member of the Alabama swimming and diving program to earn a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship the NCAA has announced.

"Kevin is a great example of what can happen when someone comes in and works extremely hard throughout their career, both in the pool and in the classroom," Alabama head coach Eric McIlquham. "He is the epitome of what we look for here at Alabama, someone who has gotten the most out of his Crimson Tide career. We are extremely proud of KG for all he's accomplished."

Greer is one of 29 men across the nation from seven different winter-sports, who will receive a $7,500 grant. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The UA sprinter is one of just 84 male student-athletes who will earn an NCAA Postgraduate scholarship this year.

"I'm very honored to have received this honor," Greer said. "It's going to help out a lot with medical school tuition and it's a great way to end my career."

The Sylacauga, Ala. native join former Tide swimming and diving standouts Mark Rourke, 1991, Amy DeVasher, 1996 and Ann-Sofie Joensson, 1997 in winning the national scholarship.

Greer holds a 4.0 grade point average for his collegiate career and will graduate with honors in May with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in Mathematics. He will attend the University of Alabama School of Medicine starting this fall.

"I have been an Alabama fan all my life," Greer said. "I grew up 100 miles from here and just to be able to come from in state and compete for Alabama was a goal of my and a great opportunity."

A 2008 Senior National Qualifier and Alabama's top 50 freestyler as a junior and senior, Greer is ranked ninth all-time for the Tide in the 50 freestyle after posting a career-best time of 20.30 at the 2009 Southeastern Conference Championships.

"Coming in my goals were to be in the top-10 and to excel in the classroom," Greer said. "It was a great feeling to be able to make both of those goals a reality."

A three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll honoree, he has also twice earned the Crimson Tide's Bob Dimick Most Scholastic Award. He was named the 2008 Outstanding Organic Chemistry Undergraduate and has been inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, Golden Key, NSCS, Phi Eta Sigma, and Sigma Alpha Lambda Honor Societies. He was also named to the 2008 and 2009 SEC Community Service Team.
