USA Swimming Sectionals, Germantown: More Meet Records Tumble

GERMANTOWN, Maryland, March 30. THE final night of short course yard swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Germantown, Md., featured even more meet records taking a tumble.

The 200 free relays opened the evening. Curl Burke's Taylor Vincent, Sarah Ellen Lynch, Jayme Katis and Meredith Cavalier won the women's title in 1:36:02 to break the meet record of 1:37.69 set by Arlington back in 2005. Loyola Blakefield's Hugh Davison, Grant Singer, Alex Porter and Tyler Thein topped the men's field with a 1:25.28 to clear the meet record of 1:26.48 set by Old Dominion in 2005.

Kate Ziegler of The Fish completed her return to swimming after a post-Olympic hiatus with a winning time of 9:46.39 in the women's 1000-yard free. Pine Richland's Lindsay Vrooman (9:51.41) and North Baltimore's Natalie Beale (9:52.05) completed the top three. The Fish's Matthew Benecki won the men's 1650-yard free in 15:38.21, while Pine Richland's Matthew Schaefer touched second in 15:39.80. The Fish's Adam Pennington claimed third in 15:45.47.

Meredith Monroe earned the women's 200-yard back title in 1:59.91, while Curl Burke's Janet Hu (2:02.43) and Retriever's Elena Donald (2:02.76) placed second and third. NBAC's Greg Pelton followed with a meet-record time of 1:47.40 to win the men's 200-yard back. The effort cleared the 1:48.46 set by Jeff Leath in 2003. Curl Burke's Alex Spina (1:50.47) and The Fish's Michael Flach (1:51.01) rounded out the podium.

NBAC's Christie Raleigh gave her team another meet record with a 49.82 in the women's 100-yard free. The swim eclipsed the 50.12 set by Jordan Wallace in 2002. Green Terror's Bethany Adams (50.39) and Lancaster's Caitlyn Karr (51.10) took second and third. Fox Chapel's Garrett Hehn touched out Mount Lebanon's Sho Sugimoto, 46.17 to 46.25, in the men's 100-yard free. Lower Moreland's Andrew Sideras clinched third in 46.50.

NBAC's Rachael Schaffer completed the women's 200-yard IM in 2:03.16 for the win, while Adams (2:03.52) and Unique's Meaghan Holloway (2:03.89) finished second and third. Lifetime's Jared Lovett grabbed the men's 200-yard IM title in 1:51.82, while Flach (1:52.19) and Ridgefield's Brian Bollerman (1:54.35) took second and third.

The 400 medley relays closed the show. Lancaster's Karr, Emily Cameron, Kasey Mann and Sarah Ault won the women's title in 3:50.35, while Aqua Gems' Alex Stuart, Kenneth Kleso, Ayman Andrews and Jamie Grennan snared the men's crown in 3:27.07.
