Croatian Short Course Championships: Sanja Jovanovic Sets Three National Records

ZAGREB, Croatia, March 24. SANJA Jovanovic proved to be on fire at the Croatian Short Course Championships as she took down three national records over the weekend.

On the first night, Monika Babok just missed setting the women's 50 free national record with a 25.42 during finals. The time came up just short of the 25.41 set by Sanja Jovanovic last year. Jovanovic took second in 25.54. Mario Todorovic clocked a 21.61 to win the men's 50 free.

Nataliya Khudyakova followed with a 4:14.36 to win the women's 400 free, while Mateo Muzek grabbed the men's 400 free crown in 3:50.75. Next, Smiljana Marinovic won the women's 100 breast in 1:10.07, while Ivan Bilic touched in 1:00.61 to win the men's 100 breast.

In the 50 backstrokes, Lidija Franic won the women's title in 27.97, while Ante Cvitkovic touched out Michael Kostesic, 25.90 to 25.91, for the men's crown. Karla Sitic then clocked a 2:15.28 to claim the women's 200 fly, while Sasa Impric finished the men's 200 fly in 2:00.34.

Jovanovic crushed her national record in the women's 100 IM with a time of 1:00.99. The effort wiped out her 1:02.34 set in 2006. Duje Draganja took home the men's 100 IM in 54.40.

During the second evening of swimming, Khudyakova won her second gold with a 1:58.66 in the women's 200 free before Hrvoje Capan took the men's 200 free in 1:47.50.

Jovanovic downed her second national record of the meet in the women's 50 fly. She, along with former record holder Babok, cleared the former record with times of 26.56 and 26.71. Babok owned the previous record with a 26.87 set in 2007. Todorovic followed with a 22.92 to win the men's 50 fly.

Ana Matkovic cruised in the women's 200 breast with a winning time of 2:35.42, while Luka Skugor snared the men's 200 breast in 2:12.41. Franic then earned her second victory of the meet with a 59.97 in the women's 100 back. Gordan Kozulj won the men's 100 back in 52.81.

Sitic added the women's 400 IM to her 200 fly title with a 4:57.22, while Impric did the same among the men with a 4:23.30 in the men's 400 IM.

The foursome of Adrijana Bencic, Dorotejac Bednjanec, Anja Trisic and Katarina Turcinovic clocked a 3:47.16 in the women's 400 free relay to break the national record of 3:48.64 set in 2007. Meanwhile, Babok's leadoff of 55.39 for Sisak Janaf set the national record previously held by Bencic with a 55.76 in December.

The third and final night opened with Babok winning the individual women's 100 free with a 55.52, just off her leadoff national record. Jeffrey Barrett clinched the men's 100 free title in 48.13. Sara Muhvic claimed the women's 50 breast title in 32.22, while Ivan Capan topped the men's 50 breast in 28.01.

Jovanovic added her third national record of the meet, this time when she dropped a 2:13.56 in the women's 200 IM. That swim beat the 2:15.60 set by Petra Banovic back in 2002. Impric, meanwhile, finished first in the men's 200 IM in 1:59.12.

Khudyakova snagged her third triumph with a 1:00.11 in the women's 100 fly, while Todorovic claimed the men's 100 fly in 50.90. Mabel Sulic then won the women's 200 back in 2:15.24, while Kozulj earned the men's 200 back victory in 1:55.17.

In distance freestyle events, Ivana Pijanovic won the women's 800 free in 8:48.96, while Dominik Straga posted a 15:51.22 in the men's 1500 free for the win.

In the women's 200 free relay, Bencic, Bednjanec, Trisic and Turcinovic set the national record with a 1:43.04. The time beat the 1:44.53 set last year. Babok, meanwhile, turned in another national record leadoff with a 25.40 in the 50 free. That swim helped her do what she just missed during the first swim of the first day – break Jovanovic's national record of 25.41 set in 2008.
