Australian Long Course Championships: Final Day Features Upset

SYDNEY, Australia, March 22. THE final day of swimming at the Australian Long Course Championships featured an upset in the sprint freestyle event.

Matthew Abood scored an upset victory over Eamon Sullivan, 21.93 to 21.96, in the men's 50 free, while Ashley Callus finished third in 22.05. Jessicah Schipper followed with a 2:05.93 to win the women's 200 fly. Samantha Hamill (2:07.73) and Stephanie Rice (2:07.85) rounded out the top three.

Christian Sprenger surfaced from a close finish in the men's 200 breast with a winning time of 2:12.04, while Brenton Rickard (2:12.10) and Craig Calder (2:12.97) took second and third. Rice then completed a difficult meet schedule with a winning effort of 4:36.71 in the women's 400 IM. Hamill placed second in 4:40.80, while Ellen Fullerton took third in 4:42.84.

In the distance events, Ryan Napoleon won the men's 1500 free in 15:01.99 with Robert Hurley (15:18.53) and Theodore Pasialis (15:20.33) finishing second and third behind him. Melinda Gorman won the women's 1500 free in 16:28.96, while Luane Rowe (16:43.42) and Belinda Bennett (16:48.23) placed second and third.

In multi-disability events, Ellie Cole won the women's 50 fly in 32.13, while Craig Morgan claimed the men's 50 fly in 26.98. Nerice Holland topped the women's 100 free in 1:04.76, while Matt Cowdrey clinched the men's 100 free title in 55.86.
