British Long Course Championships: Hannah Miley Smashes European Record

SHEFFIELD, England, March 20. HANNAH Miley kept on trucking at the British Long Course Championships. This evening, she took two seconds off her European record in the women's 400 IM.

During the distance medley finale, Miley scorched the pool with a 4:31.33. The swim evaporated her 4:33.24 continental standard set last year at this meet. She completed the swim mostly in open water with Keri-anne Payne (4:39.89) and Aimee Wilmott (4:43.33) taking second and third. Miley time also moved her into the realm of conversation for a world title as Stephanie Rice (4:29.45), Kirsty Coventry (4:29.89) and Katie Hoff (4:31.12) are all within striking distance.

Miley later captured the women's 200 breast as well in 2:26.31. Charlotte Barnes (2:30.49) and Stacey Tadd (2:30.73) placed second and third.

Thomas Haffield opened the night with a British record time of 4:12.39 to win the men's 400 IM. The swim lowered his standard of 4:12.59 set last year. Lewis Smith (4:14.06) and James Goddard (4:16.05) finished second and third.

Adam Brown touched out Liam Tancock, 48.84 to 48.87, in a battle for the men's 100 free. Ross Davenport placed third in 49.17, while national-record holder Simon Burnett took fourth in 49.34. National-record holder Fran Halsall raced away with the women's 100 free crown in 54.03, while Caitlin McClatchey (55.06) and Katherine Wyld (55.46) rounded out the top three.

In an exciting finish, Kristopher Gilchrist topped Richard Webb, 2:10.60 to 2:10.75, in the men's 200 breast. Andrew Willis finished third in 2:12.69. While Elizabeth Simmonds downed Georgia Davies, 2:10.48 to 2:10.96, for the women's 200 back title. Katherine Venters completed the podium in 2:12.40.

Michael Rock smashed the men's 100 fly national record with a time of 52.03. The effort wiped out his 52.28 set last year. Antony James finished second in 52.45, while Ian Hulme took third in 52.67.

David Davies closed down the meet with a 14:52.41 in the men's 1500 free. Richard Charlesworth (15:07.50) and Daniel Fogg (15:16.59) finished second and third.
