Records Tumble at South Carolina High School Champs

RECORDS fell like rain in Seattle at the 2000 South Carolina High School State Swimming Championships, held at the University of South Carolina in Spartanburg, on October 7.

In the boys competition, nine of 11 state records fell. Only the 200yard IM and 100 breast marks–both set by Sean Quinn in 1998–survived the onslaught.

Samad Turner, a sophomore at T. L. Hanna H.S. and Peter Osborne, a senior at Eastside H.S., led the way. Turner set state marks in winning the 50 yard free in 20.78 and the 100 in 46.74. His margin of victory in the 50 was almost two full seconds, as he blew away the field. Turner also led off T.L. Hanna's record-setting 200 medley relay squad, which clocked 1:41.09.

Osborne collected twin wins–and records–in the 100 fly (51.49) and 100 back (51.03).

Other state marks were set by Jon Moore (Wade Hampton), 200 free, 1:45.74; Josh Boyd (Eastside), 500 free. 4:41.25; J.L. Mann High School, 200 free relay (1:31.86); and Spartanburg High School, 400 free relay, 3:21.41.

Richard Kornacki won the 200 IM (2:00.45) while Brandon Cain took the 100 breast (59.64).

Spartanburg, which won only the final event, the 400 free relay, swam away with the team title, scoring 143.5 points. Eastside was second (117.5), followed by J.L. Mann (95).

The carnage was almost as great on the girls' side, as six state marks were swept away.

Kathleen Quinn, a senior at Lancaster High, notched two state marks for herself, winning the 200 IM in 2:07.23 and tying for first in the 100 back in 58.71. Brennan Moore, a junior at Spartanburg, shared the 100 backstroke gold and record with Quinn.

Austen Carter, a freshman at Eastside, set a state mark in winning the 200 free (1:53.56). Summerville's 200 medley relay also set a state mark, winning in 1:53.39.

Nichole Carter, a junior at Lugoff-Elgin H.S., recorded a state record in the 500 free (5:04.44), as did Newberry junior Samantha Lyon in the 100 breast (1:07.82).

Other winners included: Meredith Holmes, Boiling Springs H.S., 100 fly, 58.37; Samantha Combs, Travelers Rest H.S., 100 free, 54.27; Irmo H.S., 200 free relay, 1:43.44; and Summerville H.S., 400 free relay, 3:41.55.

Sumerville took the girls' team title with 138 points, well ahead of Irmo 9100) and Riverside (96).
