College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships: Day Three

WHEATON, Illinois, February 21. THE College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships concluded Saturday night with the Wheaton women and Carthage men defending their respective conference titles.

The win for the Carthage men was the Red Men's second straight conference title and third in the last four years. The Wheaton women have now won 17 CCIW championships in women's swimming including the last 12.

The Wheaton women won with a team score of 872, followed by Carthage (855), Illinois Wesleyan (629), Rose-Hulman (297), Augustana (273), Millikin (232) and North Central (175). The Carthage men won with a team score of 1,035, followed by Wheaton (734), Rose-Hulman (482), Illinois Wesleyan (460), Millikin (274), Augustana (178) and North Central (157).

CCIW Most Valuable Swimmer honors went to Amanda Croix from Carthage and Mike Kozak from Illinois Wesleyan. Jillian Morris from Wheaton and Isaac Rothenbaum from Carthage earned outstanding participant distinctions. Teresa Fish from Illinois Wesleyan was named the CCIW Men's Swimming Coach of the Year while Carthage's Beth DeLaRosby earned the CCIW Women's Swimming Coach of the Year honor.

In the final night of competition, Wheaton's Laura Jurgens came away with the victory in the 1,650 freestyle with a winning time of 17:43.46 while Augustana's Megan Lonergan finished second (17:50.68). Chris Betzle of Illinois Wesleyan won on the men's side (16:04.48) followed by Carthage's Alex Van Huis (16:10.30).

Betzle's teammate Mike Firth took the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.21 while Carthage's Kyle Winiecki came in second (1:56.76). On the women's side, Illinois Wesleyan's Andrea Peterson won with a time of 2:09.64 while Wheaton's Ashley Matthiesen took second with a time of 2:09.69.

Croix established a new meet record in the 100 freestyle, winning with a time of 51.14. Wheaton's Moire Yue came in second (52.96). Carthage's Nathan Ripley and Blake Bendix came in first and second in the men's 100 freestyle with times of 46.00 and 47.10 respectively.

Liz Hartman of Wheaton was champion in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.71). North Central's Stefani Masterton was second with a time of 2:29.06. Carthage's Stephen Schranck established a new meet record on the men's side with a time of 2:01.23 while Wheaton's Jonathan Nitz finished second (2:07.27).

Michelle Pelka won the individual title for Carthage in the 200 butterfly (2:05.59), followed by Illinois Wesleyan's Angela Lugg in second (2:13.33). Kozak established a new meet record in the men's 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.04 while Rob Morris of Wheaton finished second with a time of 1:54.61.

The championships concluded with the 400 freestyle relay. The Carthage women's team of Sarah Reynertson, Jensena Paul, Pelka and Croix won with a time of 3:32.24. The Illinois Wesleyan team of Angie Tomazin, Andrea Peterson, Lia Anderson and Lugg finished second (3:40.76).

In the men's 400 freestyle relay, Andy Bax, Bendix, Ripley and Bryce Davis from Carthage won with a time of 3:03.73. Wheaton's Matthew Gallagher, Rob Morris, Ethan Cramer and AJ Provonsha came in second (3:10.76).
