Speedo Eastern Canadian Championships: Barbara Jardin Doubles To Close Meet

HALIFAX, Canada, February 15. THE final night of short course meter swimming at the Speedo Eastern Canadian Championships featured a difficult double from Barbara Jardin.

After a strong day yesterday, Jardin touched out Genevieve Saumur, 1:58.02 to 1:58.20, for the women's 200 free title to open the final night. Lindsay Seemann took third in 1:59.20. In another close finish, Matthew Swanston downed Brandon Kingston, 1:49.76 to 1:50.13, in the men's 200 free. Karim Zayed wound up third in 1:51.50, just ahead of Daniel Jensen (1:51.70).

Marie-Soleil Jean-Lachapelle took home the women's 100 breast crown in 1:08.61, while Michaela Sceli (1:09.84) and Hilary Bell (1:09.87) completed the top three. Mathieu Bois neared the 1:00 barrier with a winning time of 1:00.12 in the men's 100 breast. Warren Barnes touched second in 1:01.59, while Minkwang Shu took third in 1:01.78.

Seemann went from bronze in the 200 free to gold in the women's 400 IM with a time of 4:39.71. Paige Schultz claimed second in 4:48.39, while Kaleigh Heard finished third in 4:50.53. Jensen, who finished fourth in the 200 free, snagged the men's 400 IM title in 4:25.32 over Point-Claire teammate Jonathan Gagne (4:29.01). Patrick Lanouette finished third in 4:32.21.

Marie-Pierre Couillard touched out Vanessa Charron, 29.00 to 29.04, for the women's 50 back title, while Jennifer Trung placed third in 29.56. In another close call, David Sharpe held off Graham Hawes, 25.30 to 25.59, for the men's 50 back crown. Swanston clinched third in 25.74.

Charron returned in the women's 100 fly for the win in 1:00.00. Lindsay Delmar touched just behind in 1:00.25, while Meghan Brockington took third in 1:01.54. In the men's 100 fly, Sharpe won in 53.68 with Tim Ruse (54.16) and Swanston (54.24) completing the podium.

Jardin pulled a difficult double by pairing her 200 free crown with an 8:32.75 to snag the women's 800 free title. Seemann finished second in 8:36.13, while Zsofi Balazs took third in 8:49.52. In the men's distance event, Brandon Kingston took the 1500 free title in 15:31.55. Xavier Desharnais touched second in 15:39.95, while Jensen placed third in 15:40.08.
