Hawaii High School State Swimming and Diving Championships

WAIPAHU, Hawaii, February 17. PUNAHOU dominated the HHSAA State Championships, scoring 75 points for first place. Iolani and Baldwin took second (21) and third (18) respectively. For the boys, Iolani won (62), while Punahou took second (43) and Hawaii Prep placed third (30).

Girls Individual Results
Chelaine Eliazar (Punahou) opened the meet with a first-place finish in the diving competition (392.55), followed by Kathryn Chinn (Punahou) with 370.50 points and Sheyenne Machida with a score of 368.35.

Eliazar's teammates, Christel Simms, Brandi Halemano, Brailey Hirose-Hulbert, and Naomi Ng secured a win in the 200 medley relay (1:52.55).

Simms had individual wins in the 100 butterfly (56.92) and the 100 backstroke. She set a state record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.73.

Junior Rachel Fujita (Punahou) took first place in the 50 (24.27) and 100 (52.65) freestyles. She teamed up with Ng, Zoe Namba, and Kendra Rask for a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.70).

Elizabeth Matthews of Seabury Hall won the 200 IM (2:09.46) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.34).

Senior Jennifer Cahill had first-place finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyles with times of 1:54.81 and 5:08.02 respectively.

Punahou closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.94). Simms, Fujita, Rask, and Elise Baker contributed to the win.

Boys Individual Results
Freshman Spencer Madanay (Punahou) outscored his opponents to finish first in the diving competition (438.70). Kaiser's Kainoa Lopes and Seabury Hall's Austin Howlet finished second (431.15) and third (412.40).

Iolani won all three relays, opening the meet with a state record in the 200 medley relay. Ian White, Kacy Johnson, Geramiah Simoes, and Rayfe Gaspar-Asaoka beat the 2002 record (Sun, Toba, M Eckert, J Anaya) by only .01 seconds with a time of 1:35.97.

Johnson had individual wins as well. Johnson took first in the 200 IM (1:53.95) and the 500 freestyle (4:38.23).

Simoes won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.24. He teamed up with Gaspar-Asaoka, White, and Kevin Jones in the 200 freestyle relay with a first-place finishing time of 1:28.58.

Daren Choi of Pearl City won the 100 freestyle (47.46) and the 100 backstroke (51.84).

Iolani's 400 freestyle relay team of Gaspar-Asaoka, Jones, Chase Weber, and Johnson took first place with a time of 3:15.45.
