Speedo Western Canadian Championships: Amanda Reason Downs Canadian Record

EDMONTON, Canada, February 14. DURING the second night of short course meter finals at the Speedo Western Canadian Championships held in Edmonton, Amanda Reason knocked down her second national record of the competition.

Reason, who broke the women's 50 breast record during prelims with a 30.94, surpassed that effort with a sterling time of 30.48. The swim moved her within a second of the world record in the event, set by Jessica Hardy with a 29.58 at the 2008 World Short Course Championships. Allison Long (31.49) and Tianna Rissling (32.07) took second and third.

Kendra Chernoff opened the evening with a winning time of 2:11.57 in the women's 200 fly. Brenna Maclean (2:12.97) and Julie Policht (2:15.94) rounded out the top three. Stefan Hirniak popped off a time of 1:56.92 to win the men's 200 fly, while Anders McIntyre finished second in 1:59.40. Karl Wolk took third in 2:01.19.

In the 200 breast, Rissling clinched the women's title in 2:28.62. Rachel Nicol (2:30.40), Chelsey Salli (2:30.43) and Bronwyn Pasloski (2:30.44) finished a close battle for second. In another close contest, Bogdan Knezevic touched out Sean Nugent, 2:15.14 to 2:15.19, for the men's crown. Zach Somjen wrapped up third in 2:20.50.

Heather MacLean pocketed the women's 100 free victory in 54.78, while Michelle Williams (55.61) and Reason (55.90) completed the top three. Hassaan Abdel-Khalik overtook Chris Manning, 49.75 to 49.93, for the men's 100 free crown. James Goodway claimed third in 50.17.

Deanna Matthews hit the wall in 2:09.67 for the women's 200 back win, while Hilary Caldwell (2:10.73) and Alex Komarnycky (2:13.11) touched second and third. McIntyre turned his second-place finish in the men's 200 fly into a victory with a 1:58.89 in the men's 200 back. Wolk (2:00.72) and Jeremy Ramshaw (2:01.41) rounded out the top three.

Eric Chan concluded the night with a 28.29 triumph in the men's 50 breast. Knezevic turned in a second-place 28.76, while Kyungsoo Yoon touched third in 29.05.
