Texas vs. Houston

HOUSTON, Texas, February 11. NO. 3 Texas (8-1) claimed 12 victories and scored an 80-62 victory over Houston Wednesday evening in the Sprint for the Cure meet at Houston's Campus Wellness and Recreation Center Natatorium. The meet features events with conventional strokes but unconventional distances.

Texas opened with a win in the 100-yard medley relay, where juniors Katie Hamilton and Carlye Ellis, freshman Leah Reinhardt and sophomore Becca Tomlin finished in 49.38. Freshman Caroline McElhany took the night's first individual event, the 300 freestyle, in 2:55.28, and senior Traci Van Matre took third in 2:56.11.

Junior Brie Powers led a one-two Texas finish in the 75 freestyle at 37.13, and freshman Kelsey Amundsen took second at 38.20. Junior Adrienne Woods claimed the 75 backstroke in 43.05, and Hamilton took second in 43.29. Ellis added a win in the 75 breaststroke in 46.66, and sophomore Kierstin Thornhill took third in 48.18.

Amundsen notched a win in the 25 freestyle in 11.16 and was followed by Powers in second at 11.25. Freshman Maren Taylor led the Texas diving contingent by taking fourth in the one-meter event with 268.20 points, and Diana Wilcox took fifth at 257.92.

Texas went on to claim the 150 freestyle relay, where Amundsen, Powers, Tomlin and Van Matre were victorious in 1:10.49. Woods tacked on another win in the 50 backstroke in 28.11, and Ellis added a win in the 50 breaststroke in 29.90. McElhany added an individual win in the 75 butterfly in 40.93, and Woods notched her third individual win of the night by taking the 50 freestyle in 24.33.

Taylor led UT in the three-meter diving event by taking third with 285.83 points. The Horns wrapped up the meet by taking the 100 freestyle relay, as Amundsen, Powers, Tomlin and Woods finished in 44.06.

Texas begins competition at the Big 12 Championships on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at Texas A&M's Student Rec Center Natatorium.
