UW-Milwaukee vs. UW-Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin, February 7. SOPHOMORE Danielle Wenger won twice ands broke the school record in the 500 freestyle but it was not enough as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming & diving team dropped a 150-93 decision to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Saturday afternoon at the Dorschel Natatorium.

The Phoenix – the four-time defending Horizon League champions – won four of the first five events and never looked back. The loss snapped the Panthers record-tying 13-dual win streak and gives them a 13-3 record to conclude the regular season. Green Bay improves to 12-1 in the battle of league heavyweights.

"Green Bay is a really good team that is swimming very well right now," UWM head coach Erica Janssen said. "We had a lot of solid swims across the board but the results were not what we were looking for. We swam well – the times were okay – but it was just not enough."

Wenger set a new school record in winning the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:04.01 to eclipse Kelsey Ogle's 2008 school standard of 5:04.27. In addition, Wenger also won the 1000 freestyle in 10:26.67.

Senior Molly Finn also got in on the record-breaking, setting a new pool record in winning the 200 butterfly in 2:07.55.

There were numerous close finishes on the day, but none of them seemed to go UWM's way. Freshman Sarah Wardecke was on the wrong end of two of them, falling in the 50 free by 14-hundredths (24.47 to 24.33) and in the 100 free by just one-hundredth of a second (53.14 to 53.13).

Sophomore Ellie Gross was touched out in the 200 free, as her time of 1:55.29 was less than a second behind the winner.

In the diving events, senior Ashley Hall was second on the one-meter board with 258.45 points and sophomore Kelsey George was second on the three-meter with 240.38.

Milwaukee is off for the rest of the month before hosting the Horizon League Swimming & Diving Championships, starting Feb. 25 at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center at the Rite-Hite Family YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis.
