McDonogh’s Giles Smith Breaks National Independent High School Record

BALTIMORE, Maryland, February 6. AT the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference Championships yesterday, McDonogh's Giles Smith became the first independent high school swimmer to clear the 20-second barrier in the men's 50-yard free.

Smith, who is a Swimming World four-star prospect headed to the University of Tennessee, clocked a sterling time of 19.74.

The performance cleared the previous record set twice by Joe Hudepohl while representing St. Xavier of Ohio. Hudepohl charted a time of 20.01 to first set the record on March 2, 1991 before matching that effort on Feb. 15, 1992.

Jimmy Feigen of Winston Churchill of Texas remains the high school sprint king with a 19.49 to his credit on Feb. 23, 2008. Feigen is currently a freshman at the University of Texas.
