Thiago Pereira Declares Intent to Train in the U.S.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, February 5. FOLLOWING a recent trend of international athletes moving to the states for at least some sort of temporary training, Brazilian Thiago Pereira stated his plans to train in the U.S. for a short period of time.

"My goal is to spend some time abroad and gain some experience. I hope to get some good workouts and even participate along side some of the top swimmers of the US," Pereira said. "I may even compete with Michael Phelps, that is if he participates in any events this year. One thing is for sure, I don't want to be away from Brazil for too long. Here, I have my club and my coach. The only problem is that there aren't enough competitions. In the US, there are swim meets every week with top-name athletes."

Pereira has not declared a specific training site as of yet, but Auburn University could be a likely choice with Brazilian Olympic gold medalist Cesar Cielo currently in residence.

Previously, South Korean Tae Hwan Park moved to Los Angeles, Calif., to train at the University of Southern California for six weeks.
