Wingate vs. Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, North Carolina, January 31. THE Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams picked up big victories Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Bulldog women won twice, defeating the host Bears 100-21 and King (Tenn.) College 104-18. The Wingate men topped King 206-33.

The meet concludes the regular season for Wingate. The nationally-ranked Bulldogs will host the 2009 Blue Grass Mountain Conference meet Feb. 11-14 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center in downtown Charlotte.

The Wingate women won 13 of 14 events, while the Bulldog men equaled the feat by touching first in 13 of 14 events as well. In addition, the Wingate men established 11 Lenoir-Rhyne pool records Saturday.

For the Wingate men, freshman Lee Sousa (Cornelius, N.C.) won three events. The first-year standout won the 100 Backstroke (54.30) and the 200 Backstroke (1:57.17). Sousa teamed with junior RJ Voetsch (Evan Mills, N.Y.) and sophomores Dwight Richardson (Newport News, Va.) and Daniel Hoagland (Wilmington, N.C.) to touch first in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:31.93.

Richardson had a good day. In addition to the victory in the 200 Freestyle Relay, he was also a member of the victorious 400 Medley Relay team with senior Ben Schoenbachler (Monroe, Ga.), redshirt junior Robbie Alexander (Rockwell, N.C.) and junior Carlos Jones (Decatur, Ga.). The Wingate 400 Medley Relay posted a time of 3:48.86. Individually, Richardson won the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.13.

On the women's side, sophomore Sarah Supcoe (Charleston, W.Va.) won two individual events for the Bulldogs. She touched first in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:32.13. The St. Andrews Presbyterian College transfer also took the checkered flag in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 4:50.99.

The Bulldogs won both women's relay races, touching first in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:44.18) and the 400 Medley Relay (4:21.96). Bulldog junior Lara Golesorkhi (Stuttgart, Germany) and sophomore Henni Coetzer (Indian Trail, N.C.) picked up a double play, as the two student-athletes won members of both relay teams.
