Virginia Tech vs. Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, January 31. THE Virginia Tech men and women's swimming and diving teams each captured victories this afternoon over Pittsburgh. The H2Okie men, who hold a 6-1 record, posted a 183-111 win, while the 20th-ranked women registered their sixth win of the season, as well, 177.5-118.5.

The nationally-ranked women's team compiled a total of 11 individual wins on the afternoon and the men captured 13, for a team total of 24 wins in all.

On the women's side senior Megan Newell, sophomore Lauren Haley and freshman Erika Hajnal each scored two wins for the H2Okies. Newell, who swam in her final regular-season meet for Tech, registered wins in the 100 free and 200 fly with times of 52.27 and 2:04.67, respectively. Haley added wins in the 100 and 200 back events. The sophomore swam 100 back in 57.15, while finishing the 200 in 2:02.62.

Meanwhile, Hajnal added a victory in the 200 free, touching in at 1:51.42, and in the 200 IM, crossing the line in 2:07.85.

For the men, junior Scott Harkins led the team with three individual wins.
Harkins posted victories for Tech in the 100 and 200 breast, while tying senior Ian deToll in the 100 free with a time of 46.03, sharing the title in the event. A junior from Williamsburg, Va., Harkins completed the 100 breast in 57.86 and the 200 breast in 2:06.16.

Along with sharing the 100 free title, deToll scored a first-place finish in the 50 free, touching in at 21.19, for his second win on the day.

In diving action, junior Mikey McDonald scored a first-place finish in the
3-meter dive, while coming in second in the 1-meter event, scoring 371.70 and 355.43, respectively.

The relay teams swept the day away, with both teams winning the 400 medley relay and the 200 free relay. The women's squad of Haley, junior Abby Barney, freshmen Katie Priess and Kaleigh Gomes prevailed in the 400 medley relay, finishing the race in 3:52.49. In the 200 free relay, the H2Okie team of Newell, senior Sara Smith, sophomore Morgan Allen and freshman Emily Ferguson, touched in with a time of 1:34.42 to claim the title in the event. The Tech men of deToll, juniors Chip Hughes and Jonathan Huss, along with sophomore Ryne Francis, garnered a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay, crossing the line in 3:22.79. Harkins, and deToll, who combined for five wins, teamed with sophomores Zach Holmes and Richard Ulatowski to win the 200 free relay in 1:21.73.

This was the final meet for the women this season before they compete in the ACC Championships Feb. 18-21 in College Park, Md. The men, however, will compete Friday Feb. 6 when they take on Maryland in their final contest this season, before heading in to the postseason. The start time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
