Navy vs. Penn, Rider Men

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, January 25. THE Navy men's swimming team collected a pair of wins Saturday afternoon besting both Penn and Rider in a double-dual meet held at Sheerr Pool.

The Mids, who produced the top finisher in a total of eight events, defeated the host Quakers for the fourth-straight year, posting a 178.50-118.50 win, while easing past Rider with a 196-87 victory. Meanwhile, Penn bested Rider, 187-105, in dual action.

With the two wins, the Midshipmen improve their dual mark to 16-1 on this season.

"We were pleased with the overall team effort even though our times weren't exactly what we were looking for," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "The guys raced well and we're looking forward to the next couple of meets."

Junior Adam Meyer (Bethesda, Md.), along with sophomores Sam Martinette (Richmond, Va.) and Olaf Olson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) were all double-event winners for Navy.

Meyer paced the field in both the 100- (50.01) and 200-butterfly (1:49.09) events. In the 200, the third-year standout led a 1-2-3 Navy finish, which included his brother, Mark Meyer, who finished with runner-up honors (1:52.15) and Patrick Veltman, who touched in third (1:53.67).

Martinette produced a season-best showing to capture the 500-freestyle (4:38.31) and also claimed a spot in the winner's circle in the 1,000-free (9:32.72), where he finished nearly 10 seconds faster than the next nearest competitor from Rider or Penn.

Olson, a second-year diving standout, and senior Jon Galinski (Phoenix, Md.) teamed up to produce 1-2 finishes in both the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions. Olson won the 1-meter event with a score of 315.70 and claimed the top honor at 3-meters with 323.45 points, while Galinski produced scores of 310.70 and 316.20, respectively, to finish second in both events.

Navy junior Andrew Hetzner (Riverside, Calif.) also recorded and individual win for the Mids, taking the 100-backstroke with a time of 52.10.

The Navy men's team is off from competition next week and will return to action on Friday, February 6 when the Mids visit Columbia for a 2:00 pm meet.
