Delaware vs. William & Mary

NEWARK, Delaware, January 25. THE men's 200-medley relay squad broke the Rawstrom Pool record as the University of Delaware swimming and diving teams split their Colonial Athletic Association meet with William & Mary on Saturday afternoon.

The men (10-2, 6-1 CAA), led by their record-setting relay performance, posted a 176.5-123.5 victory over the Tribe, while the women (8-3, 4-3) dropped a close 156-144 decision to William & Mary.

With their six victories in conference action this season, the Blue Hen men finished with their finest regular-season CAA record since joining the league in 2001-02.

On the men's side, the medley relay team finished its home slate in the same way that it started the year. After breaking the pool record in their first meet against George Mason this season, the Hens lowered the mark in their final home competition as the foursome of John Ohlhaver, Ross Buckwalter, Hans Gillan, and Grady Carter finished in 1:35.02.

Ohlhaver, Gillan, and Carter later capped the meet by teaming with Robert MacLeish to take the 400-Freestyle Relay in 3:07.63. The three Blue Hen standouts also had strong days individually as well.

Ohlhaver, competing in the final home meet of his outstanding career, won the 200-freestyle in 1:43.32. Carter also continued his dominance in the 50-freestyle, taking the event in 21.32, while Gillan won the 100-freestyle (46.13) and 100-butterfly (50.85).

Matt Abbruzzese and Matt Wehrman also won multiple events for the Hens. Abbruzzese, Delaware's standout senior diver, won the 1-meter board with a score of 304.05 before taking the 3-meter dive with a 289.58 mark. Wehrman captured both distance freestyles after placing first in the 1650-yard event (16:17.22) and the 500-free (4:42.15).

Freshman Josh Hyman rounded out the Delaware victors after winning the 200-butterfly in 1:55.84.

On the women's side, the Blue Hens dominated the breaststroke events, taking the top three spots in both competitions. Freshman Hannah Facchine led the charge in both the 100- and 200-yard events, winning the former in 1:06.66 before taking the latter in 2:23.37. She was followed closely by her teammates in both events as Marianne Flynn finished second in each, while Meghan Barber took third in the 100 and Kellie Pastore rounded out the top-three in the 200.

Facchine also swam the second leg on the team's victorious 200-yard medley team after joining with Emily Smathers, Sarah Begley, and Erinne Butler to finish in 1:49.10.

Begley later returned to the pool to take the 100-butterfly in 57.87, while Cortney Barry finished first in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:08.21.

The women also received a nice performance from their divers as Shannon Burke won the 1-meter dive with a score of 234.30, while Lisa Goyette finished second in the 3-meter event and third in the 1-meter board.

Delaware will cap its 2008-09 regular season schedule with a swimming-only meet against local rival Widener on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
