USC vs. UCSB

LOS ANGELES, California, January 10. USC men's and women's swimmers resumed the 2008-09 dual-meet season with a pair of convincing wins over visiting UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (Jan. 10) at McDonald Swim Stadium.

The men's squad avenged a road loss last year to the Gauchos by winning 120-85 to improve to 4-0 while the women won 112-88 to improve to 3-0.

Troy's women's squad led off the meet with a win in the 400y medley relay as seniors Kristen Lahey and Rebecca Soni, freshman Katinka Hosszu and senior Katy Houston won easily in 3:43.36.

USC's men's 400y medley relay of sophomore Jake Grosser, senior Kevin Bartell, senior Ankur Poseria and sophomore Buddy Turner won in 3:20.27. Poseria made up almost a body-length deficit on the butterfly leg and Turner held off the charging Gauchos, who finished in 3:20.52.

USC sophomore Ellie Doran dominated the 1000y free, running away with first in 10:04.49. Junior teammate Kristina Rigterink was second in 10:21.43.

Trojan sophomore Kevin Little won the men's 1000y free in 9:29.23, coming from behind to defeat junior teammate Even Marcus, who was second in 9:29.86. It was a season-best effort for Little.

Senior Rachael Waller led wire-to-wire in the 200y free, touching first in 1:50.31. In the men's 200y free, Trojan junior Zoltan Povaszay won in 1:39.18 while freshman Patrick White snuck into second (1:39.66).

UCSB's Anne Marie May, among the fastest in the country in the 50y free, won the event in 23.10 while USC's Kristen Lahey was second (23.61). In the men's 50, UCSB went 1-2 with Bradley Matsumoto (20.62) and Jeff Sudbury (20.64) with USC's Grosser third (20.76).

USC swept the women's 400y IM thanks to freshman Tanya Krisman (4:22.47), Soni (4:23.23) and freshman Ania Kowalczyk (4:25.70).

Trojan junior co-captain James Martin won the 400y IM in 3:57.08. Freshman teammate Will Orlady was third (4:03.13). Trojan senior Vanni Mangoni, making his 2008-09 debut, was sixth (4:08.41).

Hosszu won the women's 200y fly in 1:59.60 with teammate Krisman in second (2:01.87). In the men's event, freshman Josh Joiner emerged from a tightly bunched field to win in 1:50.38.

Waller won her second event of the day by out-touching UCSB's Nadia Dwidar at the end of the 100y free in 51.44 (to Dwidar's 51.64). USC's Houston was third (52.83). UCSB's Wood won the men's 100y free in 45.40. Povazsay was USC's top finisher, taking third in 46.10.

Junior Dina Hegazy won the 200y back in 2:02.73 while Kowalczyk was second (2:04.36). In the men's 200y back, UCSB's Chris Good won in 1:50.06 while USC's Martin was second (1:50.97).

Hosszu came back to win the 500y free in 4:53.94, beating out teammate Doran, who was second in 4:54.16. In the men's race White won going away in 4:33.01 while Little was second in 4:38.59. Marcus rounded out the sweep in 4:39.18.

Soni, the three-time defending NCAA champion in the 200y breast, won in an easy 2:14.30 while Houston was fourth (2:19.40). In the men's 200y breast, Travis Jepson won in 2:05.07 while Orlady was second in 2:05.76.

The women's 400y free relay of Lahey, Waller, Gosper and sophomore Krissy Forelli took second in 3:27.60. UCSB won in 3:25.37.

In the men's 400y free relay, USC held off UCSB to win in 3:00.85 to the Gauchos' 3:01.25.
