TCU vs. Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, January 7. THE TCU men's swimming and diving team triumphed against Mountain West Conference foe Utah Friday, topping the Utes by a score of 151-147, while the women ended the night behind, 157-141. The men's squad claimed the win by taking first and third place in the final event of the night.

"Our men's team found a way to win and that's exciting for us," TCU head coach Richard Sybesma said. "It was an incredible meet tonight and I'm very proud of both of our teams. We swam very well.

The Frogs had to take first and third place in the 400-free relay, the final event of the meet, in order to take down the Utes on the road. After Laszlo Gyurko, Rourke Barrett, Edgar Peyro and Josh Bagby finished in first at 3:05.22, TCU secured the victory when Ben Iannacone, Andrew Moore, Dan Bodin and Friedrich Grott teamed up to tap the wall at 3:12.11 for third place accolades.

The men advanced to 4-0 overall and 3-0 against the MWC. The 3-0 clip against the league is the best start for the men since joining the league in 2005-06.

Gettel, a Plano, Texas native, contributed three individual wins, while Crespo added a pair of his own. Gettel continued his dominance in the backstroke, remaining undefeated in both events by taking the 100-back with a time of 51.16 and the 200-back in 1:50.35. Gettel also paced the field in the 200-IM, leading the way at 1:55.12, a couple seconds faster than TCU runner-up Andy Garcia-Montes.

Crespo also defended us unbeaten mark, taking both breaststroke events for the fourth-straight meet. The Panama City, Panama product blasted away for a 56.42 clocking in the 100-breast before winning the 200-breast at 2:06.58.

In the freestyle events, Bagby remains undefeated in the 50-free after clocking in at 21.51, while Gyurko won his fourth 200-free title in as many meets with a time of 1:42.70. Junior diver Kyle Callens boasted a win from the one-meter springboard, taking the victory with a scorecard of 299.85, while also earning runner-up honors in the three-meter dive at 333.38.

TCU began the evening by winning the opening event, as Gyurko, Crespo, Peyro and Bagby joined forces to claim the 200-medley relay.

On the women's side, TCU took six of the 16 events, but battled to have a chance in the final relay.

Senior Jennifer Ferguson and junior Maria Paula Alvarez each claimed a pair of victories. Ferguson took down the Utes by sweeping the diving events, earning a win from the one-meter springboard with a score of 283.73, while also picking up the three-meter victory after a 317.25 output. Her 317.25 score in the three-meter marks as the third-best score in TCU history.

Alvarez started the evening with a win in the 1000-free, her second of the season, before beating the competition in the 500-free at 5:10.22. Freshman Ali Berry followed closely in the 500-free, earning runner-up honors at 5:11.61.

TCU swept the backstroke events as junior Brittney Martinez claimed her first 100-back title of the season, leading the way at 59.32, and sophomore Jennifer Oster paced the field in the 200-back at 2:08.21.

TCU will jump back into the water Friday as the Frogs travel to Provo, Utah to battle BYU at 7 p.m. CT.
