Fast Times at Minnesota AA Girls High School State Champs

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. EDEN PRAIRIE senior Sarah Solfelt won two individual events for the third straight year at the Minnesota AA Girls High School State Championships, held Nov. 22 at the University of Minnesota. Solfelt was one of three girls to score double victories at the state championship. Paige Gilgan and Roxane Akradi also returned home with two individual gold medals.

Edina won the team crown with 255.5 points. Wayzata, which scored wins in both freestyle relays, was second with 189. Eagan and Eden Prairie tied for third with 146.

The versatile Solfelt, who has swum different events each of the last three years, won the 200 yard IM and 100 butterfly. In the medley she clocked 2:02.93, just missing the state AA record of 2:02.90 and the all-division mark of 2:02.85. She recorded a 56.08 to win the fly.

Eagan's Paige Gilgan, another senior, was the only swimmer to set a state record. Gilgan touched in 1:50.44 in the 200 free, slicing two-tenths of a second off the record set last year by Solfelt. Later, she came from behind on the final 100 yards to overhaul Edina's Courtney Green and win the 500 in 4:58.98. Green clocked 4:59.29.
