Open Water Swimmer of the Year Maarten van der Weijden Announces Retirement

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, December 17. ACCORDING to reports by Swimming World correspondents Oene Rusticus and Steve Munatones, Swimming World Open Water Male Swimmer of the Year Maarten van der Weijden announced his retirement yesterday at a Dutch gala during which he received the Dutch Sportsman of the Year award.

After accepting the award in an emotional speech, van der Weijden stated that he was leaving the sport to work for the national cancer fund.

For those that do not know van der Weijden's story, he fought off Leukemia earlier in the decade to become one of the most inspirational stories of the 2008 Olympic Games held in Beijing. At the completion of the first 10K event in Olympic history, van der Weijden stood tall with the gold medal in the event.
