Northeast 10: Day One

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, December 5. MATTHEW Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University men's swimming team finished first in the 1650 Yard Freestyle event, as the Owls took an early lead in day one of the Northeast-10 Championships at Hutchinson Natatorium on Friday evening. SCSU holds the lead with 130 points, followed by Bentley (91), Le Moyne (61), Saint Michael's (51), Saint Rose (48) and Pace University (18).

In the first event of the competition, Southern wasted no time in capturing the lead. Aaron Rocheleau (Newington, Conn.), Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.), Benjamin Prue (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R.) combined for a time of 1:34.75 in the 200 Yard Medley Relay good enough for first place and a new Northeast-10 record.

Sorena finished the 1650 Yard Freestyle event with a time of 16:45.30 and was closely followed by three teammates. Thomas Hardy (East Massapequa, N.Y.) took third place (17:25.73), Kyle Roloff (Ramona, Calif.) in fourth (17:29.12) and Mike DiVerniero (East Haven, Conn.) finished fifth (17:50.93) for the Owls.

Later in the final event of day 1, four Owls combined for another first place finish in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay. Rocheleau, Roloff, Jeremy Frey (Pipersville, Pa.) and Michael Cozzi (East Hampton, Conn.) finished the event with a time of 7:06.44.

For the women, the Southern Connecticut State University women's swimming team edged Le Moyne College by eight points after day one of the Northeast-10 Championships for an early lead on Friday night at Hutchinson Natatorium. Southern finished the night with 159 points, followed by Le Moyne with 167, Saint Rose (101), Bentley (98), Saint Michael's (72), Assumption (70) and Pace University (28).

Emily Sundel (West Hartford, Conn.) earned 20 points for the Owls when she won the 1650 Freestyle event with a time of 17:56.85. Sundel was followed by teammate Nicole Huerta (Santo Domingo, D.R.) who swam the event in 18:19.09 and a third place finish for the Owls.

In the 800 Freestyle Relay, four Owls combined to a post a NCAA "A" Cut qualifying time. Cody Hall (Parker, Colo.), Sandy Kinne (Madison, Conn.), Kristen Frost (Madison, Conn.) and Huerta swam the event in 7:42.94, tacking on another 40 points for Southern.
