Illinois-Chicago, Chicago vs. Northwestern

EVANSTON, Illinois, November 15. THE UIC swimming and diving team broke two long-standing school records in a spectacular showing against Chicago and host Northwestern on Saturday afternoon.

The Flames men's and women's squads defeated the University of Chicago, with the men taking a 203-75 win and the women 212 to 74 victory over the Maroons. Both squads fell to host Northwestern.

Zach Van Swol set a new school record in the 1000 free, breaking the 14-year old mark of 9:35.92 (set by Kevin Pickard in 1994) with a meet-winning time of 9:35.41. Van Swol would later go on to win the 500 free (4:39.12) as well.

Later in the meet, newcomer Kayla Redig won the 200 fly in a school record-smashing 2:05.59 effort, breaking Erin Garret's 10-year old record of 2:07.17. In the 100 fly, Redig would barely miss breaking a second school record as she was victorious in the shorter event in a time of 57.74.

Other top performers of the day include Will Ikeda claiming both the 100 (58.63) and 200 (2:07.39) breaststroke events for the second week in a row, Andrew Schmitt winning the 100 fly (51.35), Sarah Harper taking the 200 IM (2:31.31) and Evan Dunn coming away with a 200 IM (1:56.01) victory to close out the day's individual events.

The Flames return to the UIC Natatorium next Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. as UIC hosts Saint Louis.
