Teuscher Stars at Rio World Cup Meet

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 12. AMERICAN Olympian Cristina Teuscher won two gold medals at World Cup 1 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the first stop on the 2000-2001 World Cup tour. The World Cup meets are swum in a 25-meter (short course) pool.

Teuscher, 22, won the women's 400m freestyle (4:09.81)and 200m individual medley (2:13.70). She also finished second in the 100 IM and 200 free.

Germany's Jirka Letzin was the only swimmer to win three individual golds at the three-day meet broadcast nationally on Brazilian TV. Letzin swept the men's individual medley events, taking the 100 in 55.38, the 200 in 2:00.00 and the 400 in 4:17.70.

The men's distance events produced more than their share of excitement, with the USA's Robert Margalis and Brazil's Luiz Lima battling stroke-for-stroke in both the 400 and 1500 free. In the 400, the two finished in a dead heat, both clocking 3:51.42. In the 1500, it was Lima who got his hand on the wall first in 15:14.57, seven-hundredths ahead of Margalis.

Other double winners included Australia's David Jenkins (men's 50, 100 free), Brazil's Eduardo Fischer (men's 50, 100 breast), Britain's Karen Pickering (women's 100, 200 free), Brazil's Fabiola Molina (women's 50, 200 back), South Africa's Sarah Poewe (women's 50, 100 breast), and China's Ruan Yi (women's 100, 200 fly) and Zhan Shu (women's 100 back, 100 IM).
