Shippensburg vs. Clarion

CLARION, Pennsylvania, November 2. CLARION'S men's and women's swimming and diving teams started the dual meet season with wins over Shippensburg by scores of 166-128 and 173-122, respectively, on Saturday at Tippin Natatorium.

In individual events, Gina Mattucci (So. Jeannette/Penn Trafford) was a double winner taking the 100 backstroke (1:01.60) and the 200 back (2:13.78).

Other individual event winners were Megan Burrows (Fr. Canton, Oh.) in the 200 free (2:01.23), Kelly Connolly (So. Cranberry Twp. Seneca Valley) in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.74), Paige Quigley (Fr. Highlands Ranch, Co.) in the 200 butterfly (2:17.91), Teresa Hillsten (Fr. Denver, Co.) in the 50 free (24.88), Jamie Maloney (Jr. York) in the 100 free (55.25) and Kaitlyn Johnson (So. Uniontown) in the 100 butterfly (59.79).

In diving, Kim Ogden (So. Canton, Oh.) won the 1 meter with 257.18 points, while Jena Gardone (Jr. Apollo) took the 3 meter competition (264.98).

The win puts the Clarion women at 1-0 on the season under 9th year head coach Mark VanDyke. The Golden Eagles will visit Carnegie Mellon University next Saturday.

On the men's side, the Golden Eagles featured five double winners including Ryan Thiel (Jr. Ligonier), Rich Eckert (Jr. Versailles/McKeesport), Jon Kofmehl (So. Johnstown/Richland), Dustin Fedunok (Jr. Gibsonia/Pine Richland) and Logan Pearsall (So. Port Allegany).

Thiel won the 50 (21.86) and 100 freestyles (47.56), with Eckert taking the 100 (1:01.48) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:13.30) races and Kofmehl the 100 back (54.82) and 200 back (2:00.54).

Fedunok won the 200 freestyle (1:45.26) and the 500 free (4:53.95), with Pearsall taking both diving events (1 meter (257.25; 3 meter 306.23).

The Golden Eagle men are 1-0 under 9th year head coach Mark VanDyke and will travel to Carnegie Mellon University on November 8th.
