World Cup, Singapore: Ous Mellouli Doubles

SINGAPORE, November 2. IF not for Brazil's Thiago Pereira earning a couple of close victories over Tunisia's Ous Mellouli, the Singapore stop of the FINA World Cup would have been all about the Tunisian.

Mellouli finished the day with a pair of titles, pushing his tally to four for the meet, which easily could have been six if not for Pereira's triumphs in IM events.

Men's 1500 freestyle
Olympic gold medalist Ous Mellouli of Tunisia claimed his third title of the meet thus far with a time of 15:06.05. He needed a final surge to overcome New Zealand's Matt Woodrow, who finished with a time of 15:07.81 and led at different points of the swim. New Zealand's Kane Radford wound up taking third in 15:23.99.

Women's 100 freestyle
Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom picked up the victory in 53.94, while Australia's Kelly Stubbins (54.11) and Kara Lynn Joyce of the U.S. (54.29) rounded out the podium.

Men's 200 freestyle
Ous Mellouli pulled off his favorite double of the circuit, as he once again claimed the 1500 and 200 free back-to-back triumph with a time of 1:44.47. That gave him a fourth win in Singapore. Australia's Nicholas Ffrost finished second in 1:45.53, while Brazil's Rodrigo Castro took third in 1:45.64.

Women's 50 breaststroke
Tara Kirk of the U.S. captured the sprint breast crown with a time of 30.78. Australia's Sarah Katsoulis finished quickly behind with a time of 30.97 for second, while Sweden's Joline Hostman took third in 31.22.

Men's 100 breaststroke
South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh won his second title of the meet with a time of 58.19, while Australia's Christian Sprenger joined him in the 58s with a second-place 58.54. Brazil's Eduardo Fischer placed third in 59.01.

Women's 400 IM
South Africa's Kathryn Meaklim claimed her second title in Singapore with a triumphant time of 4:32.21, while Russia's Svetlana Karpeeva took second in 4:40.85. New Zealand's Natalie Wiegersma finished third in 4:43.44.

Men's 100 butterfly
Evgeny Korotyshkin got into the win column in the 100 fly with a top time of 50.84. Australia's Matt Jaukovic settled for second with a time of 51.46, while compatriot Chris Wright touched third in 51.78.

Women's 100 backstroke
Australia's Sophie Edington won her second crown of the meet with a time of 59.02, while Russia's Anastasia Zueva placed second in 59.14. Brazil's Fabiola Molina wound up third in 59.33.

Men's 50 backstroke
Randall Bal of the U.S., the 2007 World Cup champion, grabbed a victory in the sprint back with a time of 23.35 – just off his American record of 23.33. Australia's Robert Hurley, the newly-crowned world-record holder, took second in 23.53, while Peter Marshall of the U.S. finished third in 23.56.

Women's 200 butterfly
Australia's Amy Smith walked away with the title in the 200 fly with a time of 2:07.39, while South Africa's Kathryn Meaklim (2:09.69) and New Zealand's Charlotte Webby (2:13.30) rounded out the podium.

Men's 200 IM
Brazil's Thiago Pereira edged Ous Mellouli of Tunisia in the 200 IM, 1:53.76 to 1:53.78, in an exciting finish. Australia's Chris Wright earned third with a time of 1:59.10. The win was Pereira's second of the meet.

Women's 400 freestyle
New Zealand's Melissa Ingram cruised in the middle distance affair with a time of 4:04.55, easily out-distancing Australia's Bronte Barratt (4:07.68). South Africa's Melissa Corfe placed third in 4:10.43. The win gave Ingram her second first-place cash prize of the meet.

Men's 50 freestyle
Sweden's Stefan Nystrand captured his second win of the meet with a time of 21.39 in the men's splash-and-dash. Australia's Tom Miller (22.00) and Mitchell Patterson (22.06) completed the top three.

Women's 200 breaststroke
Sweden's Joline Hostman claimed the title with a time of 2:23.21, while South Africa's Kathryn Meaklim took second in 2:24.05. Australia's Sarah Katsoulis finished third in 2:24.37.

Women's 100 IM
Russia's Svetlana Karpeeva emerged with the win in 1:01.61, while Brazil's Fabiola Molina took second in 1:02.11. Australia's Sophie Edington placed third in 1:02.36.

Men's 200 backstroke
Australia's Ashley Delaney topped the 200 back with a time of 1:52.31, while Randall Bal of the U.S. touched second in 1:52.80. Australia's Robert Hurley rounded out the top three in 1:56.56.

Women's 50 butterfly
Australia's Marieke Guehrer completed the Singapore stop with a victory in the sprint fly in 25.56. Sweden's Therese Alshammar grabbed second-place honors in 25.82, while Singapore's Li Tao finished third in 25.93.
