Denver vs. Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, October 29. IN a night of back and forth wins, the University of Utah women's swimming and diving team came out on top of Denver on Friday night with a score of 165 to 133. While the Ute men put up a great fight, they fell behind the Pioneers by a score of 151 to 141.

"Denver had some really strong swims tonight," head coach Greg Winslow said. "The one thing I was most proud of is how our guys never gave up and kept fighting the whole way through."

Eric Murray, who placed second in the 500 free (4:47.08), 200 IM (1:59.49), and the 200 free (1:43.33) as well as third in the 100 free (47.27), topped his collegiate career's best times in the 500 free, 200 free, and 100 free.

"I felt really strong out there tonight. I gave all I had into these races and it paid off," said Murray.

Other notable men's performances include wins in the 200 fly by Eric Bonicelli (1:55.22) and in the 100 free by Garret Beaman (46.85). Bjorn Gunnarsson, Andy Lamb, Beaman, and Brent Murray all triumphed over Denver in the final 200 free relay (1:24.39). In diving, Nelson Foo saw a lot of success, topping the boards in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 346.95 and 326.10, respectively.

"Although I have room to improve on 3-meter, these were my best scores so far this season. I'm so happy about that!" Nelson enthused.

In regards to the successful Ute women, Winslow said, "Our women's program has never been at this place in October before. They just keep getting better each week and I couldn't be prouder of them."

The swim of the night was the 200 back win by Danielle Caldwell (2:06.46). This was Caldwell's first career win as a Ute.

"That certainly was a breakout swim for me. My 100 back didn't go as well, so to turn it around in the 200 was very exciting," Caldwell stated. Hannah Caron also performed well, winning the 200 fly (2:05.44), 100 fly (55.97), 200 IM (2:05.99), and assisting the 400 medley relay in a victory (3:48.91). Also on the 400 medley relay was Traycie Swartz, Samantha Zuch, and Natalie Edge.

Edge won in the 200 free (1:53.95) while Zuch secured first place in the 100 breast (1:06.03). Maiya Otsuka also managed a win in the 200 breast (2:22.66). Meanwhile, Kwan Ling Yu wrapped up the diving boards with wins in both the 1-meter and 3-meter with scores of 265.35 and 267.90, respectively.

Jana Willsey, who placed second in the 200 fly (2:07.39), said, "It's always exciting to come back from being behind in the beginning to winning!"

Up next for the University of Utah swimming and diving team is a trip to Notre Dame, Ind. on Nov. 11, to take on the Fighting Irish.
