Washington State Swimmers Score in Classroom

Pullman, Wash., Nov. 9. SEVERAL current and former members of the Cougar swim team have recently achieved success outside the realm of athletics.

USA Swimming recently named WSU freshmen Rachel Dong (Paramount, Calif.) and Christina Swanson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) to its High School Scholastic All-America team. Both Dong and Swanson have played important roles in leading the WSU swim team to a 5-1 record this season. After only three college meets,
Dong holds the fourth best time in school history for the 100 butterfly, while Swanson is ninth place on the Cougars’ all-time list for the 100 breaststroke.

The SAA team is comprised of high school student-athletes, who have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher, and have competed in an individual event
in the 1999 summer National Championships or Junior Championships, 1999 U.S. Open, 2000 spring National Championships or Junior Championships. Points are
given for both GPA and championship placing.

A pair of WSU alumnae, Kelley Miedema ('00) and Eli Schmied (’00), are both currently pursuing medical school. Miedema has been accepted to medical school
at The University of Cape Town in her native South Africa. Schmied, from Woodinville, Wash., currently attends Creighton Medical School in Nebraska.

"These women exemplify the type of athletes we recruit," WSU swim coach Rocco Aceto said, "those who can be successful academically as well as athletically."
