San Diego vs. UCLA

LOS ANGELES, California, October 25. THE No. 16 Bruin swim and dive team opened up the season with a bang on Saturday as they easily defeated the University of San Diego 195-95. Bruin swimmers and divers won every event except for the final relay as the 200 medley relay team of Madeleine Stanton, Brittany Beauchan, Kirsten Byers and Anna Poteete swam an NCAA "A" qualifier in the first meet of the season (1:44.50). In all, UCLA tallied 15 event wins with six event sweeps.

Poteete, Stanton, sophomore Brittany Beauchan and freshman Yasi Jahanshahi notched double event wins during the meet with Poteete winning the 50 (23.89) and 100 (50.94) free, Stanton swimming to victory in the 100 (57.85) and 200 (2:03.71) back, Beauchan with wins in the 100 (1:04.98) and 200 2:20.56) breast and Jahanshahi winning the 100 (56.17) and 200 (2:01.89) fly.

Sophomore Sam Vanden Berge led the way in the 1000 free with her time of 10:11.86. Fellow sophomores Emily Bibb (200 free, 1:51.96) and Dani Milligan (400 IM, 4:25.64) also posted wins during the meet.

Freshmen Jennifer Lamb also got into the win column in her first meet as a Bruin with a win in the 500 free (5:03.61).

Senior Marisa Samaniego led the sweep on 1M with her score of 236.77, while fellow senior Brittany Hill led a sweep on 3M with a score of 240.15.

The 200 medley relay set a new meet record. Also setting meet records were Poteete in the 100 free, Jahanshahi in the 100 and 200 fly and Stanton in the 200 back.

The divers will next compete at the Trojan Invitational on October 31 and November 1, while the swimmers will host UCSB and Oregon State on November 7.
