Virginia vs. Clemson

CLEMSON, South Carolina, October 25. THE Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Clemson to wrap up its season-opening road trip in South Carolina. The women, ranked 10th in the nation, earned a 169-131 victory while the 15th-ranked men beat the Tigers 189-105.

Three Virginia swimmers were triple-event winners against Clemson. Third-year Mei Christensen claimed the 100 back (54.51), 200 back (1:57.17) and 200 IM (2:03.25). The men were led by third-year Eric Olesen and fifth-year Ryan Hurley. Olesen won the 100 back (49.68), 100 fly (49.95), and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team. Hurley won both the 100 breast (56.96), and 200 breast (2:01.79) and was also a member of the victorious 200 medley relay team along with teammates Peter Geissinger and Scot Robison.

Other event winners for the Virginia women included Jen Narum in the 1000 free (9:59.79) and 500 free (4:54.36), Katherine McDonnell in the 100 breast (1:04.52) and 200 breast (2:18.15), Megan Evo in the 200 fly (2:01.72) and newcomer Lauren Smart in the 100 fly (55.63).

For the Cavalier men, Taylor Smith claimed the 1000 free (9:19.15), Robison won the 200 free (1:38.87) and Darren Ankosko earned first place in the 500 free (4:34.00). Meanwhile, Pat Reams had a first-place performance in the 200 fly (1:50.27) while first-year David Wren finished first in the 200 back (1:49.32).

Newcomer Briggy Imbriglia won both diving events, earning a mark of 346.50 on the 3-meter board and 312.97 on the 1-meter.

Virginia will play host to Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. Diving events will begin shortly after 4 p.m. and live results will be available through the link on VirginiaSports.com.
