Providence vs. American

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 24. THE American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Providence College Friday afternoon in team's first dual meet of the season. The AU women defeated the Friars, 192-99, while the men's team fell, 209-109.

The women's team won 11 of 13 events and received two individual victories from both Dorothy Isaacs and Alexandra Wessel. Isaacs recorded wins in both the 50 free and 100 free. In the 50 free, Isaacs won by more than 1.5 second as she finished in a time of 24.27. In the 100 free, she clocked in at 52.80 while beating the second-place finisher by nearly three seconds.

Wessel won both the 200 free and 200 back. Her victory in the 200 free came in a time of 1:58.21, more than three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. In the 200 back, Wessel led a 1-2-3 finish for the Eagles and stopped the clock at 2:11.68. Kelsey Cardwell placed second in the event in a time of 2:17.67 while Paige Mellars took third in 2:18.66.

The AU women also swam to a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM. Shelby Legel led the way for American as she won the event in 2:14.14. Eleanor Clay placed second in 2:16.19 and Elinor Shetter took third in 2:18.78. Clay also won the 200 breast in 2:27.30 ahead of Legel who placed second in 2:31.68.

Matt Pelletier led the men's team with two individual wins. The junior won the 200 back by more than five seconds in a time of 2:00.45. In the 200 IM, Pelletier placed first in 1:59.88.

Brian Galm also recorded an individual victory for the men's team, taking first in the 100 free in a time of 49.49.

The Eagles will be in action again next Friday, Oct. 31, as they host Gardner Webb. Session I of the meet will begin at 1 p.m. and session II is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
