College Recruit Rankings Profile: Four-Star Chelsea Howard Class of 2010

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 21. FOUR-star flyer Chelsea Howard of the Class of 2010 is next up in our Swimming World College Recruit Rankings Profile series. Howard swims for Duke Aquatics and preps at Riverside High in Durham.

Where and when did you start swimming?
I started swimming when I was four years old at the Triangle Sportsplex in Hillsborough, N.C.

Who would you name as the most influential person and coach in your swimming career?
My parents and my sister, Ashley, along with my current coach Eric Steidinger

What, to this point, is your best moment in the sport and why?
Traveling to Omaha to watch Olympic Trials, and then making my cut one week later in the 100 fly.

Walk us through a day of practice:
We start by stretching for 15 minutes and then do 20-30 minutes of dryland. We loosen up with our warmup and a mini-set which prepares us for the main set. Mondays is distance-oriented free, Tuesdays are prime stroke day, Wednesdays are generally IM, then test set Thursdays, Fridays can be aerobic, free or prime. We usually swim 5,000-7,000 meters per practice, then warm-down and go home.

What is your favorite set?
8×200 "fartlek"(1. first 50 fast, 150 smooth; 2. 50 build, 50 fast, 100 smooth; 3. 100 build, 50 fast, 50 smooth; 4. 150 build, 50 fast twice)

What is your least favorite set?
8×200 fly descend 1-4×2

What are your short-term goals?
Make World Championship trials this summer.

What are your long-term goals?
To swim at a Division I Top 25 school in college, and make NCAAs.
